A woman who appeared to need help in the middle of the night and was subsequently shot to death may have been the victim in a case of self-defense gone wrong, according to WJBK-TV.

Renisha McBride, 19, was killed Saturday in Dearborn Heights, Mich, located just west of Detroit. Her family says she approached a stranger's house for help around 2:30 a.m. after she had a car accident, according to the Detroit News. She was fatally shot on the porch.

McBride’s aunt Bernita Spinks told the paper she believes it was a case of racial profiling.

“He shot her in the head ... for what? For knocking on his door,” Spinks told the paper.“If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911. ... She went looking for help and now she’s dead.”

Family members described McBride as a hardworking, soft-spoken woman who keeps to herself, according to WJBK-TV.

Earlier, police said that the victim's body had been left on the porch after her death, but police since determined that she was shot there. Police said they have identified the shooter, but haven't released a name. According to the Dearborn Press & Guide, a report has been sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, who would be responsible for charging the suspect.

Though police have so far released few details about the suspect or the circumstances of McBride's death, commenters have reacted with remorse and outrage, drawing parallels to other cases where African-American victims were allegedly killed without cause.

Members of Renisha McBride's family said they believe the African-American woman was racially profiled by the homeowner. They said McBride, whose cell phone had died, had gone up to the house on Outer Drive seeking help after she was involved in an auto accident early Saturday morning.

They say McBride was shot in the back of the head with a shotgun as she turned to leave.

Police released few details and would only say that McBride was shot as she stood on the porch.

My main issue with this is the fact that she was shot in the back of the head, indicating that she was leaving. Shooting someone in the back of the head indicates to me that there was no threat from this woman, and I'm personally unsure why there haven't been charges pressed here.

The article I linked blames racial profiling, I'm not sure there's anything to that (the article also mentions Trayvon and Zimmerman), but if it's true that she was shot in the back of the head, then there is something seriously wrong if the homeowner is not arrested.

There are zero situations in which shooting someone in the back of the head with a shotgun is self defense. Zero. It's physically impossible, unless they're counting "side of the head" as the back. The absolute best case scenario is the shooter had shitty trigger discipline and it was somehow an accident, but that's still guaranteed manslaughter, maybe even negligent homicide.

But if you own a car, shouldnt you be sufficiently financially stable enough to own a cell phone? Cant you dial 911 even on a brand new phone without a carrier? Unless her phone died too.

We're not told how bad the accident was, and I know even being in a near-accident gets you full of adrenaline and not thinking logically.

Besides the fact that listing out all the shit she "should" have done doesn't change the fact that someone shot her in the back of the head. I'm going to say that that person shouldn't have shot her.

If she was like me, my phone is always either dead or at home by my computer because I last used it to log into WoW/FFXIV. (people jump on my case all the time for not having a phone charged, I just never call or text anyone so it doesn't occur to me to keep it handy)

Also I'd be scared as fuck to leave my car at night. I speed walk to my jeep and I find every person extremely suspicious if they aren't trying to actively get into their own car. I know it's random paranoia going on in my head but still...
