As someone who played 1.0 and burned out in about 3 weeks mainly due to frustration at the horrible interface... When that video was released and the game shut down a year ago I couldn't at the time be bothered. I had a few friends who had stuck around and kept telling me things like, "1.23 makes the game really fun you should come back!", but I never gave it a serious thought.
I was also absorbed in Korean TERA and went on to NA TERA when it launched. I was willing to stick with original XIV even if there was a lack of content (original Korean TERA and even 58 cap TERA makes this game look it has all the content in the world), but the unresponsive and frustrating battle system was too much for me personally.
Around spring when all the teaser stuff with alphas and betas started happening I took notice, and after trying phase 2 I was skeptical. After phase 3... I was sold, and surprised that I was actually thinking they could save what I thought would still be a train wreck.
During phase 3 I decided to google the storyline and really see what was up. I was surprised to see just how much Yoshi and the new team had done, and even more surprised when I saw he was ballsy enough to wipe out the realm with a meteor. I then saw the video, and it blew me away. I was having those old school feels things like CoP or the original kingdom hearts gave me.
So for me, as a non-legacy peasant, it is something I greatly appreciate even if I wasn't there for the original game. I actually listen to that song a lot now, as well.
I remember it eventually being so bad that every single ward was full of retainers. New people couldn't sell anything ever.
Good times.
Just an anniversary to remind me that I was right that 1.0 would suck due to terrible planning and preparation. Really SE's fault overall since they seemed to just cruise on their success from the previous decade and think anyone would buy anything they put out, ignoring the fact that the gaming and MMO markets have become more competitive since they put out FF11. The horror stories I've heard from people who reappeared in 11 after 1-2 months and some friends I have now who've played it astounds me. This 1 guy is literally using the same computer for 1.0 and 2.0 and his computer ran 2.0 fine, meanwhile because 1.0 was just poorly optimized and he'd lag constantly for no other reason and it'd make the game unplayable. I think they just expected everyone to deal with their shit like in 11, only they seemed to not realize there wasn't years of progress with a character tying people to 11 unlike in 1.0 at launch.
That said I do have fun in 14, albeit the limited amount of things to do is an issue since they made leveling pretty easy. But with work + school it seems to work out for me since I can just get my myth tomes and do other things the rest of the week and not get stressed out like in old 11 having to juggle 10 events to do every week.
I'm so glad those days are over. Yet at the same time I kind of miss them.
It's been a crazy ride in XI. Before Yoshida I was pretty bored then when he took over I thought he pretty much destroyed any chance this game had since I felt like I was reliving the worst of FFXI again. How he turned V1 around to V2 was surprising.
I liked Yoshida's 1.0, once skill points were replaced with exp and market search was added. It was fun to be able to mix and match overpowered abilities from different classes, and I'll miss THM healing with:
/aoe on
/ac "Sacrifice III" <me>
...for the rest of this game's existence.
I remember being excited when 14 was first announced and then as more information started becoming available my excitement started to wane slowly being replaced by dread. I wasn't expecting (or wanting) XI-2 but the info coming out sounded bad. Finally when beta hit and I started to hearing horror stories my excitement was completely gone and I cancelled my pre-order with a fear that the game would be atrocious. Sadly my fears came to pass but SE realized they needed to take drastic measures if there were ever going to salvage this wreck of a game.
I kept playing XI but kept and eye out for information on what Yoshi-P was doing to try and undo all the damage that had been done. Finally about the time that Voidwatch-mageddon hit XI I decide to jump ship and give XIV a try. I believe that this was around 1.18 but I'm not positive, and while the game still had many flaws at least I was having a bit of fun leveling a new character and trying new classes so I decide to stick around.
When the end came I wasn't sorry to see it go since even with all the fixes that had been made the underlying infrastructure of the game made it impossible to completely address the many problems. I decided to go hang out and Mor Dhona and see what the final event was all about. What I got was a few Imperials running around and a whole bunch of random disconnects/server crashes. Looking back on it I can see what Yoshi was trying to do, he essentially wanted to have a giant FATE that everyone could participate. Again the shitty base code and infrastructure let him down, but then the End of an Era video was released and all was forgiven.
I remember the thread on here and all the OMFG BAHAMUT's and people freaking out that we didn't see this coming. When Louisoix died to save the adventurers I'll admit to shedding a few manly tears from the feels. And the music, I still listen to that song regularly and it gets me every time. It gave me great hope that SE knew they had a lot of work to do and were trying to make a new game that was worthy of it's legacy as a FF game.
I certainly don't miss 1.0 and would never wish that anyone would have to play the steaming pile of shit that was the launch game, but I was happy to see that they had at least made it into a mildly entertaining game. After everything that happened I'm glad that I got to play 1.0 just for the fact that I got to experience Hildibrand first hand. They were some of the most entertaining quests that I have ever done.
All that aside I'm enjoying ARR sooooo much more it's not even funny.
After trying to love 1.0 at launch, I eventually gave up and resigned myself to checking in on it from time to time. I re-subbed around the last 2 months of the game, and what I miss most is the awesomely dark "end of days" vibe up in that piece. Dalamud getting closer, Garlean ships in the sky, foreboding music, cats and dogs living together. mass hysteria.
The atmosphere at the end provided one of the more rich experiences I've had in an MMO.
Also really enjoyed every iteration of the combat system, even though the crap engine and client/server communication nulled it most of the time.
Also, remember when sheathing/unsheathing weapons rooted your character?
Ahah, I laughed hard when I saw that.Gotta wonder if it is the same on the Jap version.
"If you don't miss Vana, you don't have a heart. But if you want it back, you don't have a brain"
Shamelessly stolen from some comment on the reddit section of FFXIV, but yeah. I kinda wish there was a middle ground between "Stockholm Syndrome open-world mmorpg"(FFXI) and "Theme-Park instant gratification mmorpg"(FFXIV).
Like most video game genres, there was a time When Men Were Men.
If you weren't watching where you were going and you fell off a bridge into a lava pit, everything you were wearing is gone forever. Sad day for you.
If you get shot, you will be stuck at that 3% health until you find a medkit pickup (or you die, like a man).
If you want to get out of a throw loop, you have one frame to do a reversal. And no throw escapes.
uphill both ways in the snow, etc.
Amazing that people played that pile of shit even after all the warning signs (embargoed review, obvious beta, designed by Tanaka). I really wish I could have witnessed Meteor, but didn't feel like playing a game where even simple tasks were like this are chores

Quit FFXI for ARR a few months ago and never looking back. ARR is that much better.
I really enjoyed the last days of 1.0, and I was there until servers went down, and just after that SE posted the End of An Era vid... that was an epic experience! (and laggy, very laggy >_>)
Dalamud getting bigger every patch, Nael epic fight, Atomos, chaos everywhere, mobs disapearing because Dalamud messed up the gravity, #lore
I also miss the High Quality textures. Can't wait for DX11 on ARR so they can implement them again >,<!
Anyways, ARR is better, and I expect it to be better on every patch!
Thanks Dalamud for the reset.
watching people zone out dead @ the primal fights was always entertaining especially if there was loldrama between linkshells.
Wipes should instill some fucking humility to these newer generation of MMO players.
