    Japanese/English FFXI Guide

To start this off I spent quite awhile trying to put the guide directly on this thread itself to make it more convenient but I ended up having the same issues over and over like this:
    ---------------------------
    http://cdn.guildwork.net/albums/imag...1b47d0bc99.jpg
    ---------------------------
These "?" ended up all over the guide...

So instead of cutting out just those certain areas I just decided to link it to the original.

The main reason I'm doing this now is because I just recently stopped playing XI so I most likely won't be updating it anymore. So now I'm kind of leaving this to ya'll since I won't know what the important things are. So if there's anything ya'll feel that should be added to this, a simple reply and I'll receive an e-mail and I'll add it to the main guide. I've added somethings from the Nov. 4th update but only the things that I thought might be important.

The direct link to the guide is here: Japanese/English FFXI Guide

[Backstory]Few years back before I even went into the studies of Japanese I slowly made a personal guide that only had Romaji and nothing more. A friend wanted to use the file also so I cleaned it up. Over a few years the guide kinda grew and grew and I started using Katakana/Hiragana, but to me as cursive is more formal I considered kanji to be just the same. So I slowly went over my guide adding Kanji where I thought it was appropriate. [/Backstory]

Also, I've got this question a few times over the years and I thought I'd bring it up since it did seem rather important. It's not word for word because I didn't save it anywhere but w/e. "Ok, so I don't read Japanese and I want to use your guide. I want to send them a message in Japanese and I know what I'm saying, but how do I know what is being said back to me when they reply back in Japanese because mostly likely it won't be in your guide?"
A good way to do this if your JP skill is 0 would be to get KParser or any program that can log your chat. When you recieve that message (and I know I'm going to get critics on this) is just copy and paste it in Google Translate or any other form of translating program. Now I know it will not give you a good translation but it will give you a good idea on what they say. Once you know the just of what they are saying reply with another sentence from my guide.

this can be useful.. but i should add that if you don't know JP, its best to let a JP player know in advance. manage expectation.. so that they know you're basically using some form of translation and don't ask questions.

the phrases are mostly useful, and definitely help for anyone who wants to party with japanese players.. if there are any left that still want to try or haven't already attempted it. it is worth noting that the JP players have a habit of abbreviating names for events as much as EN players do.. but in a slightly different way..
so say for example Dynamis can be called 裏 and for Delve instances they like to call it 地下 which literally means underground. its all very contextual really and even if you knew JP you may not necessarily get it straight away lol

    This is a fantastic guide.
Please allow me to add a very old and outdated FFXI Japanese/English guide

    http://shigemo.com/FFXI/nihongo_guide.html

The good part about this is that everything is written in romaji so you don't need any specific plugin in windower/windows to be able to copy-paste kanjis or katakanas/hiraganas.

I done that, there's a translate in one of the 2 guides linked where it basically says "I don't speak JP, I'm using a translator" (followed by other things I want to get across, such as procs and stuff) .... the JPs I've come across proceed to ignore that and seem to react positively to what I am saying and proceed to speak/spam JP back ... which I can't read. lol

    Not sure if trolling.

Yea, most definatly.. I believe I hit that subject somewhere in the guide in "Things You Should Know."

Another example for some other people reading are VW procs. I know it's old but that was when I actually published the guide for when it was more common to party with other JP. Say.. instead of seeing 両手槍竜騎士3 "Polearm Dragoon 3" in full wording you would see 両竜3 with each of the name's first Kanji used. It's why I put the full name for jobs, skills, abilitys, areas, etc. in the guide so that some people (that are willing) may match it up with the abbreviated version. I believe the only exception to that is Rune Fencer which is 魔導剣士. The third symbol (剣) is used for that.

That's one of the main reasons I left Romaji in mine especially when dealing with the phrases.

With "this is a fantastic guide!" I meant yours btw, not the one I linked (which, while useful, is very old and outdated)

Appreciate it! Took awhile to get it fully organized, because compared to my personal stuff I built it off of, it's like looking at class notes written in short-hand jumbled around on ripped up paper with 1/2 of it translated only...

well if you have more than 1 JP players then they're more likely to chat amongst themselves anyway. but if its in response to you more often than not its probably them saying that your japanese is good lol.

pretty much yeah.. that one is due to FFXI's japanese job abbreviation system.. the equivalent of our 3 letter job names like MNK DRK. Only problem is its 1 character and for certain jobs they are spelt using phonetics so its harder to guess out of context. (eg. PUP is か)

    Quick update:

Added some things that will help out with the past few updates.
    - Few new sentences
    - Zones of the new BCNMs
    - Races to help with Ark Angels
    - Difficulties to help distinguish between which you want to join
    - New events/magic that was added

I don't play anymore so kind of guessing on what the important things are in the past few updates. Trying to keep things current because I know that's whats in the shouts lately I'm sure... Anything else ya'll think should be added just let me know.

Okay.. was looking up some info for the Feb update and had a quick question... Was going to add the upcoming stuff to the guide so ya'll can be ready for shouts on day 1 but came to a problem. Seeing 2 new areas coming but not sure what's what and maybe ya'll can explain it to me.

Outer Ra'Kaznar -- La Kazanaru Palace

Guessing from the notes on JP/ENG forums it sounds like Ra'Kaznar is a new region coming and the Palace is going to be the first area in it (skirmish only?), but maybe someone caught something other than me? It maybe even like the Glacier and the Pso'Xja and not a region itself I'm not sure.. If the Palace is a skirmish place only than that would be what I need to translate in the guide. Which is it?
