I'm not that far in, only in chapter 4 but I had to stop and comment on this because
Spoiler: show
i dont know why but im in awe every time nadine is in a scene and how they rendered her hair
Never played an Uncharted and in a lull on the gaming front. Can I just pick this up and play without missing too much?
You can. The Uncharted games are like that in general - similar to not needing to watch all the other Indiana Jones movies. While this game does refer to the previous ones, I haven't yet seen it go into particular detail about them.
That said, there's the Nathan Drake Collection for PS4, so you could just as well go start with that. Far as I've read, they improved the first one a fair bit in that - the PS3 original is relatively clunky next to its sequels.
The main thing you will miss is some of the character relationships as they have definitely built over the previous games. You will miss some things having not played the first 3, but not enough to really hinder the overall experience
Wulfy it's like the Indiana Jones movies. Yes you miss some backstory, but each game is like a movie unto itself. However I would highly recommend playing through the series for the sheer fact that it's amazing. From start to finish.
I would definitely not skip any of them, especially not now that they are all remastered on the PS4.
Also, just beat the story for the first time... I kind of wish that they would have given this much story in the first 3 entries, but without spoiling anything it was absolutely phenomenal. Best game I've played in years.
There's one thing that bothered me throughout the last third of the game, being, but I'll get over it.Spoiler: show
NINJAEDIT: OH, so I dunno if anyone noticed this, but (epilogue spoilers):Spoiler: show
A coworker told me that the Uncharted Collection is currently 20 bucks at Best Buy, so if you want to play the games and can hold off jumping right to 4, never a better time to start.

Aside, I'm really fucking impressed with the overall graphics in this game. God I would kill to see what Naughty Dog could pull off if they weren't hamstrung by the hardware limitations of consoles.
Seeing Nolan North's actual face while speaking is confusing my brain.
I know. I watched an interview of his a few years ago and was like, you need to have plastic surgery to look like Nathan Drake prz thx.
Thanks all and Krandor for the Best Buy note; will swing by on my way home from work tonight.
I mean, he does look sorta similar. It's not as jarring as something like Hamill and The Joker, or Batman/Kevin Conroy, different mediums I know. Better comparison could prob be made, but you get the point.
Just finished. If that's the end of the series it's a good end. Game was great. Dragged a bit but at around the half way point to the end it was pretty much amazing. Bittersweet that I'm done with it. Such a great series.
Finished earlier today too. I agree, going out on a high note if they choose to end it there.
Just beat the first Uncharted in the collection set; it was pretty short. I think I finished in 6-7 hours or so. Enjoyable storytelling and characters, but I can't see myself playing the games more than once for the most part. And fuck the following:
Spoiler: show
Except for 2 I don't think I've ever really replayed the games (except for years later with the Collection).
While the gameplay is good the series is more about the character and stories to me, so once I've beaten it I'm not super motivated to run thru again.
