Now that I live in Hipster filled Williamsburg, NYC I want to ironically record all my super interesting adventures with that super cool retro feel....
Nah, in all honesty I'm looking to complete a small side project for a loved one. Gifting (for Christmas) a functional super 8 camera with a short film I have in mind.
I've looked into this a bit, and whereas I thought it would be a relatively easy task...I'm finding it a bit overwhelming. The person I'm giving the gift to curates this sorta stuff, so I have high standards to fulfill.
Stuff I'd love a bit of guidance on:
1) Getting the camera: So I've read that it is very hit and miss whether or not the camera you find both on the internet and in thrift shops will actually work (at all, or to a good standard). Is there a particular model or make I should be looking for in particular (there are soooooo many)?
Is there some questions I need to ask the buyer? Is trawling around NYC a better idea (thrift stores are the best bet right?) than the internet? What websites are the best? It seems that ebay really is my own sure bet but the range in price is huge, and there is no guarantee it'll work.
2) The actual Film. Is it sensitive to transport? E.g. when I want to ship it to the person, will I need to take special precautions? Is it extremely difficult to edit? I saw that I'll have to get a splitter and that just looks incredibly difficult from the onset.
I'm sure I'll have other questions, and if anyone is selling a Super 8 camera that they know works, I'll gladly buy from the community. I feel like it might be a long shot with such a specialist topic, but I'm always surprised by the breathe of expertise in the forum.
