Never played Fallout and frankly didn't think this would appeal to me, but after watching Destructoid's review I'm thinking about it. Watched their review video and it basically looks like a post-apocalyptic version of Skyrim. Similarly non-linear, exploration with some RPG leveling/perk elements and item collection. Is that a fair characterization or am I missing something?
Also, are all fights done using the stop-and-go VATS system? For example, if I am fighting a boss, will I be stopping and starting before every attack? The Destructoid guy said ADS was basically worthless vs. the VATS system.
I like to think of Skyrim as the fantasy version of Fallout, with less fun combat.
And all the fights dont have to be done with VATS. You can literally play the game as a shooter if you want to. VATS usage in the previous game used up AP which replenishes over time. I assume its the same here. But most likely you'll be doing a combination for shooting normally and VATS.
Performance is pretty awful on 2x 780 (driver tweaks to enable SLI since apparently there is no native SLI support, even with today's "game ready" FO4 drivers) + 4770k. Ini tweaks, all settings set to medium, etc.; it's fine as long as there's no light source in the frame... but as soon as one is focused on or brought into the screen, FPS drops from 60 to 30-40.
also protip for those having trouble with VPN: don't need to use any of that fancy shit. just use WTFast (don't need to pay, free works too), set Steam as a custom game and set it to an AUS server, when it fails to launch keep WTFast on its summary page and open up Steam manually. It'll connect and you'll be able to play.
Really simple performance tip for anyone on PC, set Godrays to Low.
Visually there appears to be absolutely zero difference between Ultra and Low, and well, yup

Just got home. Freedome connecting forever. Guess I'm gonna look for another VPN
Got mine all set and ready to go, so since this will be my first FO game, it'll be interesting to see. I doubt my PC will run this decently since its fairly old custom build, but eeeeh, I don't expect much from their games graphically anyway lol.

I have a 4gb GPU laying around too (think it's an nvidia) I could always slap but, but eh since this was a $550 custom build a few years back aside the GPU, don't think it's too terrible but yeah I had a feeling it'd run better than on my PS4 lol.
Alright after experimenting for the better part of the last hour I've found out how to fix some stuff, most of it is the same as Skyrim/Oblivion/etc. but FO4 adds an extra layer to FOV:
FoV
1) Open up your Documents folder, go in to My Games, then open up Fallout 4. Open Fallout4.ini (the text file, if you have extensions disabled).
2) Add the following lines under [Display]:
fDefaultWorldFOV=x
fDefault1stPersonFOV=x
Where x = your desired FOV. 90 or 100 are best.
3) Open up Fallout4Prefs.ini and add the same lines as above under [Display].
4) Next, open up your Fallout 4 installation folder (Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout4) and open up the Fallout4 folder that is inside of the Fallout 4 folder. Open up Fallout4Prefs.ini (it is a separate file from the one in your Documents folder, they both need to be adjusted for this to work so bear with me) and add the same lines as above to the [Display] header.
5) Save all 3 files and close. FOV should now be set to your desired level in-game.
Mouse Acceleration
One day Bethesda will learn that nobody likes this. To turn it off, open up Fallout4.ini again and add the following line beneath the [Controls] header:
bMouseAcceleration=0
Unlock Framerate
This one should be an option in the game, but it isn't. Open Fallout4Pref.ini (the one that's in the Documents folder) and change the line that says:
iPresentInterval=1
to
iPresentInterval=0
I recommend turning on a framelimiter of 58 or 118 (depending on your monitor's refresh rate; going 2 below eliminates input lag and screen tearing issues, it will not limit your framerate to 58 or 118 but rather 60 or 120). You can do this via drivers (nVidia inspector for nvidia cards) or simply enable vsync via drivers (I hate vsync so I always go for framelimiting instead).
The reason you're turning off Bethesda's framelimiter and switching to a driverbased one is thus: some people may experience a capped framerate of 30 and others may experience a capped framerate of 60, regardless of their refresh rate. The Bethesda framelimiter is also buggy as fuck. If you notice any strange physics bugs or the like, put your framelimiter at 58 and leave it there, some physics may be tied to framerate and thus anything over 60 could cause problems.
So I was excited about a whole new track of old music and so far its mostly the same shit as previous games D:
Fine by me.
My local game store didn't get them in today and I couldn't convince the dude at Target to break the street date for me. Booo. Tomorrow...
Just for curiosity sake, I checked to see if Target would allow in-store pickup because it still hadn't shipped, and nope. In-store is not allowed for an online pre-order of the game.
Won't say much more for the sake of spoilers, but when you run into the Brotherhood make sure to do the quest that gets offered. The weapon rewarded at the end of it is AMAZING.
YOU'VE ALREADY SPOILED IT OMG I DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW IF THE BROTHERHOOD WAS IN THE GAME
(This is an inside joke dating back to one of my old LS members getting butthurt that I mentioned Promathia was the final boss in...Chains of Promathia...)
Something something when you have to explain the joke...
anyone having really bad fps when playing borderless window mode?
