I heard about this from Rocl two days ago, found the thread yesterday (and was crying in my car going through the thread), and finally have the time to post tonight. Rocl asked me if I remembered Woozie, and I said "yes", in the way that I'll tell you I remember you if you post a lot. But I really didn't know him, probably because the math/science is over my head, but google helps me remember his face from the RL pic thread.

I know what depression is like, and I want to say it's the same twisted, crippling existence regardless of your circumstances. I don't know what to say anymore because I never have reliable answers for myself, but I hope there isn't anymore suffering.

    With all the love,
    Nirokun

(This is some terribly-written response to the thread and letter to Woozie, I just started crying and deleting and here we are.)

I've been here a while, even though I don't contribute very much. Just want to offer my condolences to a great dude.

Woozie was a staple here, and to echo everything everyone else has said around here, a consistently great, brilliant, nice, and humble human being in everything I've seen from him. Extremely gracious and kind, consistently smarter than I'd ever hope to be, consistently revered by everyone around here (and as I'd imagine, everyone who knew him "IRL").

I can feel for him as someone who deals with similar depression/anxiety issues. While I wish he could have found happiness and solace in this plane of existence, I just hope he finds peace in the next one, he deserves it.

    RIP Woozie.

God, I can't even find the words for this. Condolences to his family and friends.

I remember messing around in the LHC thread and watching Woozie get really short with MaxTeem which was always funny cause he never got short with anyone.

    Shit.

I hope wherever you are, you find solace in knowing how much joy and happiness you've brought to people here and else where.

Rest in peace man. You will truly be missed.

Just listened to Zi'tah again. It makes me smile, a fitting way to remember him.

What's the best way to go about this? Mailing checks written out to the funeral home at the Ohio address? Would something like a group donation pool be an option through paypal or another service? Such that if not sent directly to the funeral home it could be collected by one trusted person like Mizango or a family member who could get the money to them in one sum? Not to preclude anything anyone would send directly, but I thought it might encourage more donations.

I am in touch with his brother now, they are setting up a fund for him and to assist with expenses. I will have info most likely tomorrow (Monday) when they can get down to the bank and get it opened. Thanks again for all of your support guys.

Will post links, numbers and name(s) involved regarding the bank, funds and contacts the second I get them.

I was always too derp for the LHC/math threads but I do recall Woozie dropping those knowledge bombs way back in the day. It's encouraging to see BG grieve of our own and it shows he had quite brilliant friends willing to stand by him as he battled his inner demons. It's a shame it had to come to this.

    Farewell Woozie.

I lurk a lot more than I post, and I've had to do a double- or triple-take reading a number of Woozie's posts. His posts were almost always delightfully engaging and typified his effortless brilliance with sciences and maths. I didn't know him well, but I'm sad for those here who did, his family, and the BG community as a whole for a painful loss. Miz and others, continue to mourn and heal. Although he was young, he lived and learned well (understatement) for his years. My condolences to everyone close to him; goodbye Lorenzo / Woozie.

Thank you for this. I know with these kinds of events doing all this can almost seem natural, like of course you're going to be there to help and assist the family, but it's not easy and not something to minimize because this shit has to be difficult and it's awesome you're doing this. Among everyone else who is suffering, too, I'm sorry for your loss and what you must be going through.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    A Brilliant Mind, Lost.

I only knew Woozie through the brief time he spent with us in Demo awhile back. I don't know what happened but I'm very sorry to hear he's gone. He was a really kind, intelligent and overall standup guy.

See ya around Woozie and my thoughts go out to his family. It's hard saying goodbye to someone truly special.

I remember being dazzled by him and getting lost in wikipedia for extended lengths of time after some of his posts. Glad to hear he was playing 14 with all of you, I hadn't seen him post much lately. Will forever remember the time he copied Miz's sigatar and ended up getting a time out meant for Miz. RIP

I also think this says a lot about the community that has been built here and the friendships that have been formed. Roy and Keith and Rudy and everyone else closer to him than I was, I am so terribly sorry for your loss.

    this so much

everything he said had like 10 things to go learn about, and each of those things had 100 more things to go learn about, until a week later you're like "ok I really hate to but I have to do this... closing blah blah (and 178 other tabs)"

as a person with sleeping problems, just going and learning random new stuff from his posts has definitely gotten me through some long days and nights, i hope he can know that cuz I'm sure it makes him happy

I'd love to put hubble in my sig as tribute but I'm just not even worthy of carrying his banner.

an unquestionable loss for the world

    so sorry everyone

The loss of any mathematically/scientifically-minded individual is a tragedy. Recquiescat in Pace.

Didn't know him, but I can relate to his apparent mental health issues:
I've been suffering from (severe, generalised) social anxiety disorder for as long as I can remember (~25+ years) and it has had massively deleterious effects on all aspects of my life, to the point where, a few months ago, I issued myself an ultimatum: either start a therapy, or leave the stage.
I just couldn't do the latter, so I defaulted to the former.

No improvements whatsoever yet, so I'm getting quite depressed.

Sorry if I've made this post excessively about myself, I just needed to talk and maybe to illustrate further the fact that mental health issues are a major issue, and one our western societies don't take seriously enough in general; which ends up causing unnecessary suffering and costing precious lives.
