They were basically a Ponzi scheme and a pretty shitty one. You would trade bitcoin for bitconnect, and then you loan them their own currency with the promise of a return of 0.25% interest daily. For every referral you did were given extra interest on your returns. More referrals meant more people were driven to the site buying BCC driving the price up requiring more Bitcoin in order to start the process.

Bitconnect is a program where you lend currency to a "trading bot" and you get back just under 1% of your initial capital everyday and it releases back to you after a certain number of days, depending how much you put in. No one knows where they're headquartered or who's running things there.
