Colleges teach knowledge. They don't teach "job". That's vocational education, not a college education- and in part it's helped lead to an increasingly useless pool of workers for all kinds of important fields that have to be trained pretty much from scratch to begin with.

My history courses didn't do jack for me learning how to sell Mike Tyson Christmas presents back in the day, and it did even less now for keeping people from going in confused circles in the DMV transit systems.
I know you are generalizing as is almost everyone else in this thread but I wanted to point out that there are some careers that not only require specific college courses, but also the college won't even consider you unless you have a letter of intent from the company saying they want to hire you. Specifically I am speaking of the BA in Aviation Science at Embry-Riddil. I have to spend 2 years at a community college before I can get a letter of intent in order to apply for a transfer to Embry. This whole program is set up to specifically build skills and knowledge just as an apprenticeship would for a blacksmith or cabinet maker or an electrician, etc. It is all done in collaboration with aviation companies and colleges. There are other programs that function similarly as well (hello pharmaceutical).

So, it's not always just teaching knowledge. It is more teaching knowledge for the more general degrees that don't apply to a specific industry or field. This is where the lack of education about getting educated comes into play. Special Teams go!

Well, I hear there is money to be made being a plumber or any number of blue-collar jobs so I probably should have went to trade school instead of wasting 4 years in college.

Could have been one of those sweet 100k/yr plumbers fixing leaky pipes and drilling holes in toilets to drum up business. :/

Right. But that's what a vocational degree is, and some colleges offer those as well- but the difference isn't explained to most high schoolers. They're just told "Go to college, get a degree, jobs are there.". This is a lie. Colleges can teach all kinds of things, but far too often students are directed into something that just teaches them...well, whatever vs. "This is what you need to know and do for jobs in X."

I have done enough plumbing to know that I never want to do plumbing repair ever again. New construction, yes. Old home remodels and/or repairs, you can mess with your own shit covered slimy drain pipes. I completely understand why plumbers are paid a lot. It's an undesirable job that also requires skill and knowledge. So I'll take the college route and fly airplanes and let someone else have the 100k/yr plumbing job.

exiting them as a business because the accounting policy the govt uses is incredibly stupid and inaccurate
