    Wireless router question.

So more and more people are getting wireless devices in my house and they seem to be slowing down any games I play online.

I currently have this router WNR2000 and was wondering if there are routers that would handle so many wireless devices better or if the only solution would be upgrading my internet speed.

I don't know much about routers so any information would be appreciated!

Set up QoS if your router has it.

I had to Google what that was, but man, my internet already feels smoother, thank you so much!

While on the subject though, are there routers that would help make the Wireless connections better or is 300mbps 10/100mbps pretty much standard?

It just supports "up to" those speeds, signal strength is going to matter more than those speed ratings. I had a similar Netgear router as yours in the past and it gave me nothing but trouble such as constantly dropping wifi connections. I replaced it last year with an Asus RT-N56U and haven't had any problems since.

Humm, that router is fairly weak.

You could look into the http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC66U/ which has to my knowledge gotten rave reviews all over
I currently use the http://store.linksys.com/Routers/Lin...VVviewprod.htm but it's last-gen, if it wasn't working so well I'd switch it out for a newer one like the asus one.
I like having a guestnetwork available.

It also depends a little on what kind of traffic takes place on your network, but it's not really my field, are they torrenting? are you on some kind of DSL or Cable? do you have full duplex connection to the internet or do you receive some kind of throttling of your downstream if upstream capacity is filled? (back when I had ADSL, this was a major issue with my ISP) etc.

I recently replaced my roughly year old modem/router, single unit combo (Model: Arris) because even though the signal on my laptop said full bars it would lag and freeze pages consistently.

I wasn't having much trouble with the other comps though, 3 PCs hardlined, with a PC and a laptop on WiFi.

I hooked up the new modem/router (the exact same one, an exchange from Comcast) and everything went back to working perfectly, I could FFXIV or FFXI on 2 comps while watching netflix and browsing interwebs on the others.

It worked perfect for a few weeks until I unplugged the coaxial to put in a splitter and hook up the little cable box they gave me (for free because of the previous issue) and BAM! the same shit happened, instantly I get crashed webpages and freezes, mainly on my WiFi laptop and a bit on my hardlined laptop that is the exact same model of comp.

I had previously had all this same setup w/ the big digital dvr box and it all worked perfect, so I know it's not a signal strength issue. None the less, I undid the splitter and screwed the same coaxial from the wall directly back into the modem/router but it's still shit.

I just spent a long time on my PC that's on WiFi in another room and everything worked fine, so I've pretty much deduced that this laptop is having issue because the signal was temporarily cut and it just hasn't synced back up properly. (I'm not saying that's the case but in my layman PoV, that's what I think.)

To further complex the situation, I get about a bar and half on the work WiFi and the internet breezes by, no lag or anything.

Thanks for bearing through that, any ideas?

If it's slowing down games you play, it sounds like latency issues, not speed. A wired connection will always be superior to wireless for latency, so you might want to consider that if you can. QoS allows packet priotization, which is good for you because it means lower latency. What about just a second wireless router if you have to remain wireless? That way you're not fighting iwth anyone else until you get to the hardwired level. Should speed things up.

Well shit, I guess I'll replace it again. As I said, everything worked perfect until I unplugged the coaxial for a few seconds. Apparently that was enough to knock the Router or Laptop retarded. Seems like there could be a fix on my Laptop's end since my other Desktop on the same WiFi is working fine.

Eh, replacing it is free and it fixed the problem last time so it's prolly just as easy as figuring out what's wrong with my laptop.

I'm still open to ideas as I'm guessing I'll encounter this shit again.

Not sure what to tell you on that. I've been on wireless for a long time due to the fact my dad before he died couldn't handle wires strung though the house (he had trouble walking) and Mom? she wouldn't stand for us drilling holes/stringing wires while she was alive. No real problems except I lagged pretty bad in dynamis and some blamed my family's router.

Haven't had any problems since I upgraded to Wireless N though. Since when you moved your modem this started, I'd think it's something to do with the modem or the modem/cable box combo; Basically something with that combo, your router hates. It's hard to say just what though. I can ask my brother some since he might know more tho he has had a rough time the last couple days.
