    Steam FF7

So Amazon sale on FF7 Steam keys prompted be to take a walk down memory lane and try out that user made HD graphics mod.

But unfortunately the game refuses to load on my desktop. It works on my laptop, but not on my desktop. The launcher window loads, but when I press play the game doesn't load and sends me back to the launcher splash. Tried reinstall, tried the standard tricks (run as admin, different settings, etc.)

Interesting. I just got it from Amazon too but haven't uploaded mods yet. Mine loads regularly but it's not filling up the entire screen.

edit: Fixed the black bars issue with unchecking Keep Aspect Ratio. What mods are you using?

I haven't even installed the mods; I can't get even get the base game to load. Maybe it would magically work if I installed mods, but not hopeful.

Here's the info for the two setups if anyone cares.

    Desktop: i7 920, 6gb, Win 7 Pro 64bit, Radeon HD 4890
    Laptop: i7 640UM, 4gb, Win 7 Pro 64bit, Nvidia 335m

I don't have the steam version. I got it from SE back when they first offered it, converted it using a converter someone made and run the graphic mod and trainer on that. I'd imagine you need to do the same for the steam version though it does stop online backups of your save state.

I'm installing Tifa's Bootleg and this is going to take forever. I decided to just download a pre-existing mod package and it's 16gb so this is going to take awhile. The things I do for nostalgia...

It looks a lot better, but definitely not 16gb worth of better.

Yeah I mean it doesn't even look like a full PS3 game for 20GB~ of mods, the graphics end up somewhere between PS2 and PS3. But I have room to spare on my desktop, even on my boot drive and it only took 4 bucks, so I didn't mind.

But now I'm just unenthusiastic about going through the trouble to download and install the HD mods before I even have the game working.

I would just play on the laptop but it only has 80gb SSD, and if I'm going to play on original graphics I still have my PS discs to use with ePSXe.

I have tons of room to spare so for me it's not an issue, but yeah 16gb is quite excessive. Just watching the videos for this and I'm excited to play. I'm actually happy looking forward to a game with zero voice acting.

So apparently in the process of installing the mods, you have to rollback the version of the game, which got my install working again. So presumably my issue must be something with the newer versions of the game and ATI cards.

EDIT: And yeah getting the mods to all install and work is a PITA. The installation is only 9GB in the end, the 16GB torrent includes a lot of alternate mods you can choose not to install. But it definitely still leaves a lot to be desired.

After all that downloading and messing with it the game would not start. I just downloaded a light graphics mod and played about 40 minutes. Maybe because I'm playing on a 50" tv, but some scenes are heavily pixilated. Oh well, still a lot of fun!

What specifically was your problem getting the game to start? I went through a few hours getting mine to work, so I might know what to do.

Did you use the Kranmer FF7 Old to New PC conversion tool? It turns it into the original 1997 release to work with all the mods and trainers. I used that with the Bootleg 0039 torrent for texture packs. For the SE version that's what was needed. Knowing how lazy SE is, I'm sure the steam version is identical to their initial download version so the method should be the same. Without owning the steam version I'm just speculating on that.

Game plays well and looks good. As good as it's going to for a 16 year old game lol. I'd love an 8 and 9 version from SE. I owned 8 on PC but never had a good enough PC to run it then. Now with new textures would be great.

What I didn't do was move my entire steam folder out of program files(x86). I'm betting that was my problem. I tried once but didn't do it right and gave up.

So I took the time to get Tifa's Bootleg right and man it really is a game changer! Play it for awhile the "normal" way and then load the bootleg's mods and it's quite amazing. I'll concede this is about 85% nostalgia talking, but I'm super excited to play this game. I have almost 70 games in my steam library and I'd rather play this then any of them right now.

SE dropped the ball by not using HD textures and improving the game. The modding community breathed life back into an ageing game and I agree it's fun to play again. Mostly for nostalgia sake but still lots of enjoyment. Only hack I used was to keep aeris. Rest I did on my own, chocobo racing and that. Just like I remember.

Same thing happened to me. More than likely it's where the bootleg is trying to pull the mods from. The directions on the page aren't very clear and it definitely takes some time.

If you have the $4 and 3-4 hours to kill downloading and installing Tifa's Bootleg, it definitely makes the game worth another playthrough. Definitely not going to go through the work of getting a perfect save like I did for original release with mastered materia, 255 stats from morphing sources, mastering all four Enemy Skill materias, etc., but still worth the 40~ hours I dumped into it.

The nostalgia is great, but you start to realize how much work would be necessary to make this game a true HD title on the PS3/PS4. I'd say for the most part the HD mods make the game comparable to a PS2 remake. And it's not just graphics that need to be reworked, but a lot of stuff that only worked the first time around because of the corny blocky graphics feel.
