There is entirely too much minivan hating going on in this thread. Shame on all of you.

May be in the market for a new vehicle myself, which sucks because I/we (it's my girlfriend's vehicle) can't afford a bus pass, never mind another car. Hardcore clicking and vibration coming from underneath the accelerator whenever I accelerate out of turns. When I first heard it I thought she had a flat tire. The noise comes from the passenger side but I can feel the clicking and vibrating right underneath the gas pedal and floor mat. It's a 2001 Cavalier so it could be a number of things. Thinking it's either a transmission problem or something's fucked with the power steering. Which blows, because we just dropped six hundred on new brakes and another eight hundred getting the frame pulled out and the rear driver-side door replaced after an accident.
Sigh.
The bus pass thing was slightly hyperbolic (its like $140 for four months around here), we could probably do $100/month. I've never leased a vehicle before though and her insurance is already going to rise in February because of the accident. I assume that collision insurance is required for a leased vehicle (we're in Canada, I honestly have no idea), which would bump her payments up even more (it's a 2001 Cavalier, so right now she's only paying for liability coverage). That said, $99/month is certainly something I will investigate.
Most car manufacturers cheapest cars in their lowest trim is about $100/month. Mitsubishi is reportedly pulling out most of their line up from Canada starting next year too. They still have that 0% financing thing going on I believe. Suzuki's already pulled out too, so if you have a Suzuki dealership near you that has stock, that can also be an option. They're like Japan's Ford, but would be a nice step up from a Cavalier.
I was aiming for a Scion tC in the spring/summer since my mom works at Toyota and can get them for dealer cost + $1000, which would be about $200/month (over nine years...). Trying to afford those payments now would be pretty taxing (I'd pretty much have to find a second part time job and it would eat into my tuition savings, but there's OSAP for that and I'm digressing), but I really like the tC and it doesn't make sense to lease/buy something for four-six months to bridge me between the Cavalier and the tC. At the same time, I had no idea Suzuki/Mitsubishi were pulling out of Canada, so once my finals are done next week I'll definitely be visiting some dealerships to see what kind of financing deals they have going on. I suppose the silver lining is that it's Christmas time so a lot of dealerships have some good deals on.
Suzukis already pulled out, just their vehicle division though. Everything else is staying. Mitsubishi should be out by mid-2014. Also remember all dealerships offer rebate programs, so check into that too.
As far as what's actually wrong with the Cavalier, the couple gearheads I spoke to all think it's most likely an issue with the driveshaft and/or the driver-side axle, or a transmission problem. Unfortunately I don't have access to a hoist to get a good look underneath the car, and I don't know of any way to really investigate this myself, so I'm kinda stuck until my mechanic is free at the end of next week.
Thanks for the info guys.
