If the hardcores are only 10% of the playerbase as Yoshida stated in the interview, I fail to see how the "rampant elitism" could be their fault alone. The casuals have their own 90% of the playerbase to work with who supposedly aren't elitist and won't judge based on gear or skill level, yet you constantly see people bitching about elitists in DF and the like. It's double ironic seeing as most elitist would just make their own elitist parties and wouldn't even bother with the DF. So I find it rather odd that not even 1/10 of the people in a game suddenly control the flow of game design more than the other 9/10. Seems to me people are just confusing assholes with elitists, and douchebaggery comes in all shapes and sizes. Casual or Hardcore.

Had a full DL PLD drop on my shout WP run because I didnt have +1 book for my SMN.

It's not actual elitism, it's just stupidity.

To some extent, the upper crowd does trickle down. Like in XI, NIN sub was totally the bomb, right? Yet before you could use Ni, sometimes other options were better like /WAR. But since some schlub read something works in endgame without totally understanding why, then it must work earlier, too! Perhaps the closest we might get to that here is ability rotations. Meanwhile, the top end also had a head start on the economy and no doubt played a role in what is and isn't worth much. Depending on how early they got into things, they also could've made off like bandits and be set for a while now. To this end, the game being more dungeon-heavy perhaps benefits the player who tries, but it also hurts the economy.

See: dumbasses thinking full Darklight is required for Titan. Even when the piece in question is equal to or marginally worse than some green piece.

Even then your example shows that it's not the upper echelon that is being elitist but is in fact the lower level casuals themselves who want to pretend to be part of the big boy group and look down on others to try and justify themselves. I guess you could say it's partially the fault of the "elite" for giving the scrubs something to point to and say "You aren't as cool as these guys and I am so gtfo" but really that's just giving assholes a justification for being assholes.

As opposed to those same people quitting prior to burning out of all of the content because they're pissed that the content is gated?

Lets see which makes SE more money:

    A) Player burns through 2.1 content in 2 and a half months, then quits, paying for 3 months total.
    B) Player is pissed at every end-game event having gear lockouts and quits prior to 2.1, paying for 1 month total.

Your post makes no sense if you're going to play the "you're gonna quit da gaaaame!" card. Now, after shutting up your stupid post, lets look at the rational player C, who:

    C) Continues to gear up each class each week, splitting their time between non-gated PVE content and structured PVP, playing until the next content upgrade, and paying for X months total.

I understand your point, and everyone whining in the thread will claim to be a part of column B, but I very much doubt that you lose more players with B than with A. SE is making that bet, at least, and i think it's the safest they can make.

A third way is great but there just isn't the content to support it yet, and I've never seen a game with sufficient content to support it this early in its life cycle. All this whining is copy/pasted from every other game's forums in the first year, there is nothing original about overburning limited content then playing forum victim.

Totally, just look at all the people who quit because you could farm DL ad infinitum while waiting for coil lockouts. Coil lockouts already exist to prevent you from burning through the highest tier content in a matter of weeks/months there is no reason CT which is a step below Coil needs the same bullshit block.

Yeah no. Maybe employed adults with kids? But I have worked full time for the entirety of 14 and I've been at the "i've got nothing to do except cap myth and finish turn 1-5 in around an hour" for several weeks now. And I play things other than 14. I only recently got a big surge of wanting to cap every 50 but up until 2 weeks ago I was playing other games after coil was cleared on Monday.

Wish I would have found this thread yesterday before my card was charged. Shall now see indeed what the 17th holds to see if there is any point going on. No point to restate everything that has been said, but pretty much spot on by most. When CT was detailed, it gave me hope for the single character design I loved in XI, but it is as shot as it was before.

Like most businesses, they listen to money before words, so will speak that way myself if need be.

Oh, and Im a full time engineer with a wife and 2 children and not even close to feeling the content is being paced well. Delayed update, okay fine. But with that delay, make it worth it for the people that really wanted the update, the 10%. The casual 90% probably don't care about the update to much...

There are F2P MMOs that launched with more content than ARR, cmon. Even TOR had more in its MSQs.

Just allow people to burn through CT at their pace because Yoshida has already conceded that CT is going to be for vanity / not really important in the grand scheme of things. EM Primals / Prae HM is supposed to be the meaty content of this patch anyway with CT acting as a bridge. Throwing up more cockblocks just reminds people of the lacking content pushes them that quicker to desubbing until things get better.

I don't consider myself a top player, but if I were to estimate on SE's number of 10% of people fiddling around in Coil, I'd place myself somewhere within the top 25% of community progression since I've got crafts capped, relic+1, and relic hat/body/legs with enough tomes at the end of this week to buy myself another piece of something. And I'm on a non-legacy server (which may skew that 10% number some). I can totally understand arguments of "I can't play as much as you guys..." when it comes to unreasonable grinds like XI's RMEs and not wanting those gaps to become even wider between the haves and have-nots. Yet, this isn't even close to the same environment. I'm a reasonable guy. If someone tells me it's their first time, I'll explain shit and maybe hold back a little if they're a tank. On the other hand, because that other 75% aren't me or like me, I have to get held back in 2nd-tier content..? I don't want to be the B player in Lucavi's outline, but why the fuck should I be paying to play a game I'm being told I can't play? I'd rather be the A. And maybe by the time I am done there's enough of the next patch info out to keep me around. But for the moment, I just see SE setting a dangerous precedent.

You can talk all the trash about the whining being copy/pasted from other game's forums, but those other games went F2P within the first year, so yeah. You really want that to repeat itself?

Obviously its not going to here with the constant influx of newbies (which is a good thing), but you're not exactly making your arguments (or yourself) sound very strong here.

With all Yoshi's "prease rook forward to it" over vanity and CT drops, let's talk vanity. Because SE has taught me to be a pessimist, I am willing to make a prediction.

Vanity. Everyone knows what it should be. Items visible on the body should have an extra slot where you can put another item, which will be the one visible. End of story. Easily implemented by one code monkey and one interface guy over a week max.

But I am willing to bet SE will find a way to overcomplicate this easy task. They will claim PS3 limitations, setbacks, difficulty implementing it into the game engine for some reason. It will probably see delays. They will try to make it so you take a percentage of stats from the vanity item, completely rendering the idea useless as there will be just one answer for what to put in that slot. Everyone will still look like clowns.

If SE implements it like in my first example I will donate $50 to Child's Play. Not a lot but I'm pretty poor. Bookmark this if you want. Carry on.

Edit: this was sposed to be in complaint thread, but w/e, ill leave it here

You also forgot the part where you had to quest to unlock it, just like dyes. Seriously, I want whatever SE was smoking when they thought unlocking the ability to dye from a level 15 quest was a good thing.

Didn't Tera have it set up where you couldn't use 80% of the well designed gear in the vanity system anyway?

I recall that dev post saying it wouldn't be straight "extra slot for vanity display" but I don't remember it specifically being like the "thisgear stats / thatgear display" approach. If it goes that route, look forward to u/u items being incompatible with the system because casual demographic. Gotta make my level 38 robe look like a level 12 tunic instead. Casual.

Vanity: Please look forward to (sh)it.

I just assumed vanity was gonna be Eat Item A to make Item B look like A... with possible restrictions like not making a book look like an axe.
