As someone who played only Ballista for over a year at the highest level, I can tell you that on-paper threat assessment thing is going to be as useless as Brady games guide. Even if you had full details on all PvP abilities and gear, no one will know what the viable strategies are until a few months of rigorous PvP play.
PS. Shots fired at Ballista when SE said 2.1 would be the first genuine PvP in any FF game.
Ifrit Extreme is the last in the chain thogh. You're required to be able to get through Titan Hard plus Titan Extreme before you ever have to dodge Ifrit Extreme eruptions. I don't foresee many people getting to Ifrit Extreme whilst being completely incapable of dodging an eruption given what you will have to dodge in Titan Extreme.
Not denying that. I expect the thread over in Advanced to get a billion revisions a week amidst the cries of "shit's OP" "no it's not" "whoa check this out", and I have a combined Ballista history of like 2 hours.
Only reason I really wanted to do it now is the CC stuff and raising awareness on everybody's debuffs.
Ifrit Extreme is the hardest? O.o I haven't been paying enough attention lol.

Garuda requires ilvl 65
Titan requires ilvl 67
Ifrit requires ilvl 70
so it's a fair assumption yes
Interesting. Glad they're mixing it up like they did with Titan for the HMs.
I love the quest name for Ifrit, it's prob going to be like original Turn 5 and they already anticipating people saying its impossible.
I really can't wait to see how they do PVP with this akward movement engine. I loved ballista and even scheduled RL events around the changing daily times back in its heyday, but then I played other MMOs PVP and was shocked at how clunky ballista truly was. No less FUN, but clunky as all hell.
Flash forward to 2.0. and ARR feels a bit better, but still has the same style. Lets see how it turns out. Those are some bold words from Yoshi, and I know he's played WoW enough to have gotten a firm grasp of how they handle PVP in there. Hopefully he got in some GW2 and TERA on the side, and maybe even Warhammer.
*claps happily* The Moogle quest name is a Simpsons reference! *titters like a Japanese schoolgirl*
YOU HAVE SELECTED: REGICIDE! IF YOU KNOW THE NAME OF THE KING OR QUEEN BEING MURDERED: PRESS OOOOOOONE!
=EDIT= It's probably the same as the quest name in 1.0 (I quit a few weeks into 1.0) but I don't care.
Ballista was a bit clunky, but for the diehard fans that just ended up adding another dimension you needed to master to minimize it's effect on your play. I'm not too excited for FFXIV PvP cause I don't think it will offer anything with the depth of strategy Ballista had.
I think one of Ballista's main downfalls is it was so complex it was tough to play correctly, and most people didn't know what they were doing and nothing is fun if you're just losing and can't figure out what you need to do differently to improve/win. FFXIV PvP will probably be way more straight forward, I just hope it's not as boring as raw team deathmatch.
Ballista was complex in the sense that killing wasn't the real objective: scoring was. All it took were a few kill-obsessed idiots to throw a tight match through poor positioning, but I understand that people joined ballista for different reasons. I don't want to fall into the "lets defend archaic and sloppy mechanics by claiming stragegy!" rhetoric, so I try to look at it for what it was: a tacked-on addition that had some very interesting mechanics, but existed in a game that was neither designed for it, nor cared about it. SE was perfectly happy to give players rudimentary tools (Brenner) and leave it alone.
Yes, this lack of oversight will lead to players having to figure out the best strats to counter specifc overpowered builds, and thus foster a sense of pride and comradere for those willing to do so, but it also winds up alienating a large audience from trying it, which is never what you want when you're in charge of a paid subscription game, especially when its perfectly feasible to capture a large audience of your game simply through enjoyable, quality PVP. Wow and GW2 can attest to this quite easily, and TERA, Rift, Warhammer and Aion owed a significant chunk of their subscriptions to die-hard PVP fans. Ballista died on many servers after the blue mage craze hit and 60-caps became a Blue sausage fest.
ARR's PVP -will- be a TDM-fest until 2.2, because SE is once again light on content and behind schedule regarding certain areas of the game, and they admit this. More "meat" is coming, but if the game is at least a bit more balanced than XI's PVP (like it or not, there were useless Jobs in ballista, and no amount of "mastery" changed that) and somewhat fun, it should suffice until 2.2.
I'm still hoping for an Aterac Valley style zone for PVP with capture points, NPCs, ect. They could even rip off of the snowy theme and have it somewhere in the mountains of Corethas.
There weren't any useless jobs in 60 cap Ballista, it's basically like having noob monks in FFXIV, initially the job was deemed inferior because it was harder than other jobs to play at its full potential. This just goes to show how anyone not obsessed with Ballista didn't fully grasp it and thus can't get full enjoyment out of it. BLU isn't even that great or common in the pro 60 cap matches (the dedicated players only play 60 cap because it's most balanced). Anyways if we want to reminisce about Ballista we should take it to PM's so we don't derail this thread completely.
I think everyone understands the Quake Me Up, but I've never heard of the anime that you referenced (had to Google it).
Much better to make these things reference pop culture rather than a niche market. (Although I really appreciated the Philip K. Dick levequest in Coerthas, which is admittedly extremely niche.)
In the beginning of FFXIV the ideal Monk rotation was harder than other jobs to figure out on your own and execute. If I were playing Monk now and never read BG I'd probably be doing my rotation wrong for the first good while.
If you look at the first few pages of the Monk thread on BG, people weren't feeling too great about Monk early on, meanwhile Bard was the best thing ever because it was so easy.
