For a counter-example. I think you have various things to consider here, one of them being the age of the dictionaries in question. I'm not sure if re-spite is a pronounciation that got popular in the past few years or if there's some other misunderstanding involved, but the fact is that re-spite is a common pronounciation and, as such, may be considered valid, even more so in the context of musical lyrics, where proper grammar and pronounciation, especially in regards to the number of syllables and pronounciation, usually take a backseat anyway.
In essence, there's really no need to think badly of the song because of this one verse, it's sufficiently valid as far as grammar is concerned; if you did dislike it, you'd probably have a lot of music to dislike based on its "poor" linguistic quality.
I've always used "de-spite" too...
Stemming from the a similar word "despite" (de-spite). However I rarely, if ever, used respite in a sentence.
Before I read this, I always thought the singer said "for the nation" ... he stressed the word "light" out too high so it sounded like "nay"Bound to the dark, for the light I shun
It's from Old French, and you have an English <> German translator so idk if that was on purpose or not. Anyway, I've never heard someone say re-spite, but I won't argue that, mainly because hardly anyone seems to use it any more. The only thing I'd say is that there is the difference in the common pronunciations is that the meaning of 'respite' is not at all related to the meaning of 'spite', where 'despite' is. I don't think I've ever heard anyone use 'despite' in the sense that we use 'spite' nowadays, though 'spite' is a shortening of 'despite.' 'Spite' isn't common to both words, as if 're-' and 'de-' are applicable prefixes. It's probably just that people never changed what was previously the short 'i' in 'despite' because of the 'e' at the end until people started using 'spite' by itself. The shortened version probably eventually came to be pronounced 'spite' (turning the short 'i' into a long 'i' like so many other words that end with an 'e') which I'd bet led to 'de-spite.' Because the meaning of 'spite' is related to the original meaning of 'despite,' one could and did sometimes replace the other; 'respite' never went through that because no one would use 'spite' in place of 'respite.' Just a guess though, could easily be wrong. Also, it's 'pronunciation' not 'pronounciation.' More things that don't make sense, I know.
Man look at this etymological hullabaloo. Both pronunciations of the word are valid, but go ahead and assume that the reh-spit pronunciation is closer to the archaic French, and despite its nature as a language of borrowed words, contemporary English eschews any kind of deliberate French tongue waggling. These things tend to diverge because of colloquial English's laissez-faire (dundun dunnnn) attitude in these matters. The common pronunciation of reh-spite likely arose as just one of those "reading it like I see it" things.
Things to take away from this:
1) Phonics is weird and usually works, except when it doesn't. Because borrowing language.
2) Linguistic descriptivism 5 lyfe. Prescriptivists should be drawn and quartered.

I think this is my first time reading lyrics for a song in this game.
At first it looked like he was taking a leak but it was pretty cool when I realized he did what appeared to be similar to the stance stomp/squat that Sumo wrestlers do at the start of the match. I know there is a Sumo wrestling name for that specific movement but I don't know it.
I don't know the name for it. I just know when people do it they shout DOSUKOI. In the first part of this update's live letter Yoshi kind of mumbled it during the Titan preview.
=EDIT= Google says it's called a Shiko!
@Chamaan very interesting and thankyou for that info. Gotta rewatch the liveletter for that, I was an hour late watching it live so I intended to watch it again when the vids are up.![]()
