School bus collisions are just so rare and the nature of the impact (due to the size/shape of the vehicle) means that seatbelts aren't nearly as essential.

The windows don't open and even if you managed to be flung against it hard enough to break it there's still a piece of metal in the middle that would keep you inside. The only person at risk is the driver really.

And just in general school buses are very, very rarely going that fast, for obvious reasons.

Btw I am not arguing about how often buses are involved in accidents or anything, I was just giving the main driving force behind why they don't have seatbelt rules.

Man, I used to do some stupid shit on buses that I wouldn't have been able to do if I had to wear a seatbelt. We had seatbelts (the ones that go around your waist) but nobody ever put them on nor were we ever told to.

I remember one time I did a front flip using the momentum of the bus to get from one side to the other. Shit was fun.

The windows in the buses on campus are the same small, intractable things that were on the buses when I was in elementary school.

i can still fit through those windows, and i'm 6'3"

but yeah all the busses i ever rode in had the windows in the second picture, not first. except the tourbus we took to Gettysburg/D.C. That had huge panes of glass. While we were loading, one of the kids in my class asked if the windows opened. The driver was outside. Being the intelligent, helpful soul that I am, I deciphered the instructions and opened the window for my classmate. Turns out that set off an alarm, since the windows are only supposed to open as an emergency exit. Whoops.

how did this conversation change to school buses, i thought this thread was about an entitled fuckin kid who got drunk, killed 4 people with his car, and is now all "im too rich to give a fuck, so i shouldn't have to" and the judge was all, "that makes sense"

Well, there's not much to talk about as far the case goes.

It's a bullshit "defense" that basically uses entitlement as a legitimate excuse for bad behavior (rather than the traditional manner of entitlement being used as a means to subvert consequences for bad behavior).

In a way it would cut out the middleman, but still.

Honestly, i think it's a potentially valid defense. Someone who has been repeatedly shown, even by the cops, from a young age that nothing they do is wrong might really not understand right from wrong the way we do. And while i'm sure he understood what he was doing was wrong well enough to go to prison for it, i don't think it's unreasonable for the defense to potentially effect a lighter sentence.

All school buses I rode as a kid had windows like the second picture but every bus driver I had only allowed the kids to open the window no further than the second latch. It was still a sizable gap though.
