Time to research it before this summer. I do not camp in campgrounds either so that could also be a managed campground thing.
Correction: National Park, not National Forest. NPS tends to be much more strict compared to the FSS but after looking around some lands are more relaxed on firewood. I'm also right under you Ace in Grants Pass so I also have lots of downed litter but I mainly deal with Oregon Caves and the Kalmiopsis wilderness and their rules are pretty strict. But then again both spots had some wildfires and they would rather not deal with that again. Especially with whats left of the wilderness.

Don't forget copper pipe and green garden hose for the kiddies! We go camping a few times every year and the kids always come to me for the magic fire! lol

Get a small copper pipe, prolly 3-4 inches, pinch one end shut.(Can use more than 1 to enhance the effect)
Cut garden hose into pieces about 2-2.5 inches, small enough to fit in the pipe.
    Place garden hose in pipe
Place pipe inside the fire, as close to the center base as you can, watch how fire changes colours(I wouldn't cook marshmellows or smores or anything during this lol)
Dig copper pipe out with a stick, re-use as many times as you want

Kids will be very amused, so will the adults should they happen to be on some magical mushrooms lol

I can't say how safe or unsafe it is or isn't. We've tried the other methods you can buy comercially and they just don't compare, the effect doesn't last nearly as long as the copper pipe, still brings joy to the kids however, which is what counts.

Here kids inhale these toxic fumes, as long as you enjoy it, thats what matters.

we do the standard campsite every year with about 15 or so heads..

    our checklist as follows

    personal
    tent with sac or cot
1 set of hiking attire, 1set for cold evenings and swim trunks
hammock (i love my hammock <3)
    flashlight
    fishing rod
    Survival crap (optional)

    communal
Hatch/axe for fallen wood (we've never had to buy wood. just scavenge for fallen trees)
    knife and ropes
    Lights
WATER drinking (bring extra if you know the weather is hot or plan to hike etc)
WATER cleaning (water cooler with tap water) Helps bigtime for cleaning pots, washing hands and face
keep food simple, hotlinks, burgers, eggs, bacon, boos, smores
    boos
watermelon if we can chill it in the river YUM
    pots/pan (iron)
    cheap portable grill
foil to use the nasty campsite grills
something to start a fire with. took us like 4 trips before we can start doing it with sticks XD
    games
some tubes/floaties if theres a river near by

and weed, it makes nature better and star gazing awesome.

PLEASE DONT GO TO REI, shits retardedly over priced. everything you need you can find at walmart, amazon. if you want quality shit find specialty shops.

Bring your own water. Drinking, cleaning, brushing your teeth, whatever. You really don't want to be trusting whatever local water is around.

The most important part is obviously to bring enough beer though.
