I kinda wish this tracks more north. Nothing like a tropical storm to cool the entire southern California region. will have a better idea in 2 days.

World's getting weird and all, but in modern records, a hurricane has only brushed LA once.

And there's the Stage 3 power emergency declaration blasting everyone's cell phone. Rolling blackouts is on the menu for California.

The Extreme Heat Warnings extending to Friday with Flex Alerts all along the way.

Brushed? Two tropical cyclones have made landfall in SoCal in US history.

The category 1 hurricane in 1858, and the tropical storm in 1939.

In 1997 cat 5 Hurricane Linda briefly had a forecast tracking it NNE into SoCal as a weakened TS ...

... but it ended up spinning out NW into the open Pacific (after decimating Socorro Island at peak strength).

The California Current brings freezing ass cold water down the entire west coast from the Gulf of Alaska. It's a pretty formidable shield against cyclonic development. If you've ever visited a beach in SoCal, the surface water temp never gets above like 75F even in the hottest conditions (like this week's heat wave). E.g. Zuma Beach in Malibu tomorrow will be 71F, while in Galveston, TX it's 86F tomorrow.

SoCal is catastrophically unprepared for the kind of precipitation event a weak tropical cyclone or depression would dump in a 24 hour span. A few days of normal extratropical arctic winter storms always flood the streets of LA. Our drainage network is full of garbage and debris that's accumulated over 10 month spans of no precipitation, shit gets clogged to hell, commuters panic and suck at everything. Even if this thing gets decapitated from wind shear and spins into us as a weak depression or remnant low, we are probably fucked for a month from the gridlock and chaos.

    Yes?
    READ the wiki.
Rainfall in San Pedro was also heavy, but high winds were not reported. Parts of the embankment in the city were washed away, causing only around US$100 ($3,100.02 in 2019) in damage. The yacht Medora was washed ashore. Many reports claimed that the yacht was irreparable, but it was later claimed that the damage was not serious and could be repaired. A barge was destroyed, as was a large portion of the San Pedro wharf.

El Monte was buffeted by high winds, damaging corn crops and trees. Los Angeles and Visalia noted large amounts of rain, as much as 7 inches (180 mm), but wind strength as low.
Brushed. There's a reason it's called the San Diego Hurricane and not the Los Angeles Hurricane.

And 1939 was a tropical storm, if it was a hurricane it would have been called a hurricane.

Kay unleashes nearly year’s worth of rain, flash flooding in SoCal

I hope none of the Cali people here have been affected by the flash floods and mud slides. I do hope it is putting a dent in the heat wave and drought.

It stopped the heat wave. But the state needs winter snow in the mountains to make a lasting dent in the drought. Most of rain from thunderstorms barely replenishes the aquifers.

Yeah. Been having to turn my AC on at night.

Thankfully it looks like it will be in the 60s from here on out.

I got fall weather and rain for a few days in California and now it's like haha NOPE , back to 90 degrees this weekend.

At least it's not 115 again.
But is it so much to ask for hoodie and boot weather to stick.
