The only exception may be Pensacola, since there are so many Naval families there from different parts of the country. And yes, you can order snow tires thru an online retailer, but they are not kept in stock at the stores locally.
Snowbirds still have to drive through northern Florida to get to southern Florida, and winter tires are not banned in the state, which was the whole point of my response. It has nothing to do with people driving with winter tires when they shouldn't be, and everything to do with studs damaging heat-affected asphalt during most of the year. Whoever told you that it was about people offing themselves in sticky tire accidents was wrong.

(Also, other snowbirds stay in middle/eastern Florida, particularly those from other places, like Canada—though Quebecois prefer southern Florida.)

I feel like there is some confusion here--when I said you can't buy snow tires, I didn't mean they were illegal. I meant that stores just do not carry them in stock. You'd have to order them online and have them shipped. And all the road closures going on right now (trust me, there are many) are not to keep people from damaging the roads...its about keeping people who have very little to zero experience driving in these conditions off the roads and causing accidents all over the place.

If there's any confusion, I suppose it's related to your not remembering what you said earlier.

I explained that it's not a "safety measure" of any kind. You stated that people specifically cannot buy winter tires in Florida because it's for their own safety, and yes, that sort of restriction would be a ban. I explained why that's not true.

The only restriction related to snow tires in the Florida statutes is about studded tires (not even winter-branded tires specifically), and that's due to the damage they can cause to asphalt. I don't know why you conflated that explanation with why roads are closed right now, because that was never a part of it.

If people could easily buy winter tires right now, that would actually be beneficial, but I understand why stores don't stock non-studded winter tires year 'round.

I read that as two separate ideas. The second sentence referring to everything shutting down. Your interpretation doesn't make much sense to me because i don't think anyone would ever refuse t sell snow tires on the basis that they would cause people to kill themselves.

Yeah, you confused two separate statements as a statement + supporting statement. The first was exactly as he said; a statement about not being able to find snow tires. The second was in response to someone above talking about shutting down roads and interstates.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Ya ya I know, people not used to it etc. It' kinda funny, my husband and I were just talking about this yesterday how I felt people need to get more practice in road conditions not necessarily found in their state, because too often accidents happen from people traveling and not knowing what to do. Think this would have benefited in this situation.

I guess I should be thankful I grew up in a place that threw any and every kind of weather at you so I am well-trained.

It was a failure of local government. Georgia drivers aren't paralyzed with fear at the sight of 2 inches of snow.

but authorities said hundreds of thousands of people all at once tried to head home from work or school Tuesday afternoon, jamming the roads.

Yeah, that was the issue. People rushing home from work, people rushing to get their kids since no one had the foresight to close the schools before the storm hit..and getting stuck, without even any kitty litter. (don't laugh, cheap unscented kitty litter is as good as sand when you're stuck)

Luckily there was a lot of nice people restoring faith in humanity and helping strangers out so they wouldn't freeze. I'm just lucky I got stuck at home; I had to walk out once for milk and baby formula (my nephew was stuck over here until yesterday afternoon b/c the roads were too bad to get him, remember) and this lady asked me if I needed a ride. I was all no no, I'm fine, just headed to the nearby Dollar General, and need to cross the road..she let me cross. ^^

I put a dress on this morning. It's still only 25 in Chicago, so I reluctantly put pants on instead, but SOON.

I was getting dressed this morning and glanced at the thermometer on the dresser. It said 30, and I was super excited, until I noticed the decimal point. It was 3.0. Got in the car and it read -1F, and we've had yet more snow

    Fortunately, I'm ready.
