SF's temps are nothing like the East Bay / South Bay, but the lack of air conditioning in the city makes it brutal. Last two nights in a third-story unit have been miserable; basically laying on top of my covers with a fan blasting me, futilely attempting to sleep. Think I slept three hours last night.

It did hit 94-98 on Fri/Sat at SFO though, which is crazy.

enjoying fire season so far here in the central valley. the sky is the nice subdued grey of burning prosero skies, and it's raining a fine dust of ash. you'd think the Vlka Fenryka were about to drop pod assault at any time.

at least it's only low 90s instead of the 110+ it's been over the last couple of weeks.

Ha. I grew up in Boca. Hell, even here in central NC it's pmuch a yearly thing. Freaks my wife out BAD every time though.

Flames have prompted authorities to issue ready-to-evacuate orders for hundreds of thousands of people. In the mountains above Santa Cruz, 20,000 were ordered to evacuate Wednesday night after "fire tornadoes" ravaged scores of homes. As of Thursday, some people were still missing.

"There are people that are unaccounted for, that we are looking to try to determine where they are," said Deputy Chris Clark of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

Much of greater San Francisco has the worst air quality in the world, making the horrific situation worse in the battle to beat back so many fires. Temperatures also made the firefight difficult being that more than half a dozen heat records were shattered on Wednesday, CBS Los Angeles reported. However, some areas of the Golden State started to experience cooler temperatures on Thursday.

From space, NASA shows most of California, Nevada and Southern Idaho covered with sickening smoke spreading eastward. Fire crews are stretched thin, and they are now reaching out to other states for help. ....

Natural grasslands grow back fast and stronger following a brush fire. Its a natural part of the ecosystem it just ain't supposed to be wrecking us out of control like this

Also, it's not the exact same places that keep getting burned every year. CA is a BIG state.

Also with the constant fires, more flammable invasive species grow instead of indigenous vegetation. The chaparral forest can burn every 20 years and it's actually good for the area. Now when an area burns so frequently (less than 5 years between fires) does it become a major problem.

The Lake Fire north of LA was in an area that hasn't burned in 60+ years. It was just intense because of the heat wave.
