Left work and made the perilous drive home. Drove 15 mph. Extra butt clench on a couple of bridges I had to cross but did ok. It was a bit fun honestly and felt like I was in some town up north instead of Houston. Power went out at 10 AM and came back at 1 AM. Hopefully it stays on, cuz that shit sucked. I think our apt got in to the mid to low 50s. Cats were both bundled up next to my wife. Fuck this cold lol.

Texas derives its power from natural gas (40%) and coal (18%). Renewable sources are a blip on the radar, and even their nuclear grid is down because it requires water and the pipes are frozen. The wind turbines in the mainland are down, but the coastal ones are still up and running, so wind is supplying more power atm than natural gas is.

But hey, our voters won't do any research, so why should we? Frame the narrative so we look great! Oil and coal for everyone, baby!

ERCOT generation was 23% wind and 2% solar in 2020 - a quarter of the grid is hardly "a blip".

One of the 4 nuclear reactors tripped offline, so it is operating at 75% of the usual generation (11% of the 2020 grid).

Fun fact. At -40 you can't survive outside for a prolonged period no matter what you do. Your breathing in super chilled air and it forms ice crystals in your lungs and they start to bleed.

I'm stationed in NOLA now and the vast majority of my coworkers are all from the south, and when I found out work was cancelled today because of "dangerous conditions" I was legit confused.

It was like... 26 degrees this morning and that's apparently enough to just shutdown the area even with no other major weather conditions going on. It had rained on Saturday and that was apparently enough for everyone to think the roads would be covered in black ice 3 days later.

This is much different than Atlanta. I don't know about SC.

Atlanta announced that they where shutting shit down without the ability to do anything to the roads. Everyone left at the same time which caused gridlock, then the snow started falling and completely shutdown the roadway system.
By day 2 the roads where ok.

This is currently neglect of needed system upgrades and not giving a shit about the 1 to 3 days a year that winter shits on Texas' face. I've never seen snow stay around this long in Texas, or it get below 20 and stay there for a few days.
Literally nothing south of Dallas is built to deal with any of this, and Dallas/TX dot's road treatment only work well above the temps that we're getting.
