Windows 9, rumored to be announced at BUILD 2014 in April

Good news for those who loathe Windows 8: Microsoft is rumored to be making an announcement regarding Windows 9 during BUILD 2014 in April.

According to SuperSite for Windows, which specializes in posting everything public and secret regarding Microsoft products, the Windows-maker plans on releasing the new operating system in April 2015.

Currently being worked on under the moniker “Threshold”, the pre-alpha build of the OS will be made available to developers after BUILD 2014, and will consist of three milestone releases before it’s sent to manufacturing.

“Threshold” is also believed to be an update to Windows 8 following “Blue”, which would bring together Windows PC, Windows Phone and Xbox One operating systems.

Dunno why everyone hates Windows 8, I quite like it, and it goes well together with my Windows phone.

You should try it, Nokia is awesome I hate iPhone, and I haven't liked the Android phones I've had.

Buddy of mine has a Windows phone. LIkes the OS. Hates the lack of app support.

He has to carry around his iPad for his FFXIV authenticator.

Until it has that kind of support, it's always going to be a shit phone.

It has all of the apps I normally use, so I don't mind it. Nokia has a few nokia-exclusive apps that are awesome. Doesn't have a lot of games, but I'd rather play games on my iPad anyway. All of the "important" apps like bank, facebook, youtube, Spotify etc. that I use are on Windows Phone, too, so I'm not bothered by it. It has the battle.net authenticator, but I don't play FFXIV anymore, so I wouldn't know about that one. I still have the key chain dongle though if I'd want to play it again.

I'm with you guys. I figure I'll have to upgrade eventually but hopefully Windows 9 won't suck like Windows 8 did. I don't have a touch screen, never going to have a touch screen on my pc, so Windows 8 can eat my pants. I have a friend who's been pushing me to install 8 but I'm all, NO WAI, why do I need a stinking touch screen OS on a computer that is kb and mouse only?

    ^ This.

I havnt tried 8.1 with the start menu option or w/e the fuck they are doing..but that just feels like they are bandaging a trauma victim at this point. Work wants to go to all Windows 8...I hope 9 is better (and it probably will be if it follows the pattern of Micro$oft)

The start menu option isn't really a start menu option. It's just a button that takes you back to the home screen for those people who don't know that pressing the Windows button takes you there.

Unless there's a way to change it in to a real windows menu, I haven't played around with the settings since 8.1 was released. I should look that up, but I'm not really bothered at the lack of a start menu...

From what I've heard Microsoft is releasing a free upgrade to Windows 8 that looks more like Windows 7, and will release another upgrade that keeps the current look. Dunno if it's true or not... It's probably the THRESHOLD update.

Agree with 8 being great for touch and awful for desktop. Also...

Windows 2012, MS was smoking some shit.

I'm going to feel sorry for developers having to test their shit across Vista/7/8/8.1 and now 9.

I think Microsoft has dumped support for Vista, though 9 out of 10 times if it runs on 7, Vista has no issues.

Vista and 7 are the same kernal. 7 is just a stripped down version of Vista so it's not an issue.

There isn't an option built into the OS, but the "Start button" that's there does serve as a better visual reminder than the hot corner that 8 had that did the same thing. You can change the Start screen to open up to the All Programs view automatically, and set the machine to boot straight to the desktop, which serves to make it a lot more of just a full-screen Start menu.

Really, as a desktop OS, 8/8.1 aren't bad. The catch being that you have to completely ignore the new style Windows Runtime crap and just use the desktop side of things. Past that, the lack is in the middle ground. Flipped entirely to the tablet-ish stuff, it works well for novice users. Otherwise, it's more the power user spectrum due to the amount of hot corner/shortcut kind of stuff going on. Right clicking the "start menu" nets you a good menu (better in 8.1) that covers stuff like jumping to a command prompt without futzing with tiles, for example. It's the middle-tier users that seem to struggle most.

I'd still say that the tile interface should be an option though, as it does suck for desktop use. You just rarely ever have to see it if you pin common stuff to the taskbar n' such.

8.1 is great for the split screen, shitty win8 apps on one side, desktop in the other, I'm 99% of the time in the desktop as all the win8 full screen apps are awful.
Some missing configuration menus but all in all win8.1 is much better than Vista.

But really, at this point any fucking OS does the trick for me, browse, watch videos and the occasional videogame.

Eh, Vista is better than credited for as well. It had issues at launch for sure. Too resource intensive for older machines, inadequate testing (especially given some of the changes in it), and so on...but the biggest thing 7 did over Vista SP2 was change the name for PR purposes. It wouldn't surprise me if 8.x->9 is a similar thing.
