Episode 5 out early because of the Super Bowl on Sunday, and the next episode is the finale.

This season has been getting a lot of hate online, but I think it's fine. Wish we'd have gotten a couple more clues but maybe the finale will just make me look like an idiot.

And damn, what an end to the episode tonight.

I'm liking it? I think? Just seems a little slow to me but I was able to watch season 1 in one go so maybe that was slow too when it came out. Skipped season 2 and 3 cuz I heard they were garbo

Season 3 was okay, Season 2 was... I dunno. I didn't like it when it came out but I rewatched it recently and liked it a lot more.

Season 1 is incredible, but it was a slow burn in terms of popularity and IMO, it definitely benefits from being binge-able now. I remember watching it weekly as each episode came out and it felt a bit slow then as well. I feel like people want every season to have a Rust Cohle in it.

Is there a reason the rookie cop dudes wife is such a bitch. Like, this is the most insane crime to happen in their Alaskan town, there's like 5 cops total and she's all pissy as shit because he comes home super late. wtf does she want from him. The wife and daughter shitting on him really make for some unlikable characters that I don't think was intended lol

but yeah, this was a good episode overall though. Looking forward to whatever the hell the season finale is

Was hooked with episode 1, but the show has taken a complete nosedive since... writing is pretty horrid.

With that said, I want to finish it.

Dude he missed Christmas, coming second to your husband's boss 100% of the time is an awful situation

I also think the implication is that his staying late and missing family time at the behest of Danvers has been going on longer than just this case. It's just coming to a head now.

The latest episode should have been episode 2, or even broken into 2 and 3. But, there has been so much filler and poor pacing. Whole lot of meh

Yeah, that's how I interpreted that. I have some issues with this season, but that has never been one of them, and that's one of the most common complaints I see on /r/truedetective as well. Well, I suppose I should say saw, as I was getting some serious /r/thelastofus2 vibes from the sub, so I bailed.

I'm enjoying the season well enough and am looking forward to the finish, but the show has somehow has managed to feel both rushed and sluggish at the same time - I don't know how to describe it precisely. It feels like there's a lot more story than just one episode left, but at the same time, several of these episodes have felt like 2-3 actual events taking up 5 minutes total and balanced with lots of plot development and character building. It just feels like poor pacing overall. I also think having Jodie Foster as the lead set my expectations higher than they should have been, I was expecting something a little more polished.

The mystery itself is intriguing, and the setting is phenomenal, but it just hasn't landed for me the way the first (and even the third) seasons did.

I think what's keeping it from being a stellar season instead of just a good season to me is that we haven't really resolved any questions through 5 episodes.

We don't know who killed, Annie, or the scientists. We don't know where Annie, or the scientists died. Until episode 5 we didn't really have any motive for the Tsalal deaths, and no real clues as to who could have killed Annie (other than half the town because she opposed the mine). We have no idea what the tongue left behind was about. We don't know what's causing the perforated eardrums and burnt corneas. The spirals, I think, are meant to just be a big red herring and a big wink to season 1 but I'm sure that's going to majorly piss people off. All of Navarro's hallucinations are another big red herring IMO, but they can't all be explained away by poisoned water and repeated head trauma because she was hallucinating as far back as the Wheeler case so I'm curious how they're going to resolve that (if they even bother trying).

The inter-personal stuff has been fine (and people bitching about the Peter/Kayla drama are conveniently ignoring how much of season 1 revolved around Marty's collapsing marriage), but it feels like they've just been a little too stingy with breakthroughs for the case.

Sorry, I meant I don't think there's any deeper meaning to them than what they explained in episode 5, which people are holding out for.

Here's where I disagree. In season 1 the marriage was falling apart because he was cheating on his wife and actively ignoring his family because he wanted to bang hot chicks.

The dude in this season is actively working the case. He's not getting drunk and being some sleazebag who hates his family, he's shown he cares a lot about his son and wife. And again, the case is bizarre as absolute shit, you'd think there'd be some levels to the wifes annoyance at him staying late. Staying late to do paperwork for the town drunk being drunk? Yeah, I'd be upset about that but to be upset because 6 scientists were found frozen to death and it looks like a murder case that is linked to another murder case of a native woman years prior? No, I don't buy the upset wife bullshit for that situation.

It's one thing to miss home time for emergencies, but when you are missing it for basic evidence gathering that your boss is treating like an emergency his wife has every reason to be mad he doesn't even push back.

    Spoiler: show
pollution explanation was really stupid, the revenge ambush years in the making occurring at the exact moment guy was holding the hatch closed was insanely improbable, the wrap up interview was smug and annoying, and the final word on people seeing ghosts was "people saw ghosts, it's real Inuit shit" was also annoying

Ok well he was hiding in the hatch in response to them cutting the power at the start of the revenge ambush. So that one kinda makes sense

Thank God Tokyo Vice is back for some quality police/detective drama
