I think it's implied Navarro is dead and that's her ghost at the end, so not everyone "lived."

    True Detective

    Just finished it.

    Spoiler: show
So what was the significance of the tongue again? Was it just symbolic of Annie’s “spirit” taking revenge through the cleaning ladies?

Was my first True Detective season so I wasn’t sure how to interpret all the super natural stuff.

    Spoiler: show
They don't really explain the tongue. The two lines of thought I think most people fall into are either Hank left it there as a warning, since he arrived on the scene well before Danvers did, or it was Annie's spirit leaving a hint to connect her case to the Station.

This is the first season that really played into the supernatural aspect of things at all. I'd really recommend watching Season 1 and Season 3 if you liked this season at all. I've warmed up to Season 2 but it's by far the least popular.

Season 1 of True Detective is some of the best television ever made. Probably the best acting of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's careers, immaculate writing and pacing, incredible cinematography, and a bonus of Alexandra Daddario titties.

Like just watch the opening credits

The rest of the show, not so much.

season 1 has some issues of its own and they haven't aged well but the style, cinematography, and acting are incredible, writing mostly good (tho sometimes deeply cringe), story bangs, best of the series p easily. 2 is hot garbage, 3 is mid to solid, 4 was ambitious and had its moments but prolly should've been its own thing not a True Detective.

The thing that got me was them leaving the Tsalal station in a Tsalal pickup truck. That, presumably has a fucking heater.

Yeah I’ll definitely go and watch S1. Sounds like it’s a lot more grounded. While I didn’t hate Night Country entirely…

    Spoiler: show
It got harder and harder to put it all together in a tangible way with all the super natural stuff.

Felt like it was either gonna be ridiculously interesting, or we were gonna get full blown Silent Hill joke ending.

They ultimately did neither and just hand-waved all the spooky shit cuz something something Ennis, Alaska. Which was lame as hell.

The bigger insult to my intelligence as an investigator was when…

    Spoiler: show
absolutely no one seemingly found the false floor and hatch to the cave during the initial investigation.

But I guess the season needed to last longer than 30 minutes past the first episode.

finished last night. echoed most of my thoughts, almost literally to the word in regards to S4 as well. if they cut the random ghost shit by even 33% the show woulda been much better. but it was pretty much what like someone said earlier, which was it started off pretty ok, was a jumble in between, and the end was ok too. just wish they figured out all the middle stuff.

btw how happy are you guys for xno that he's going to see TD1 for the very first time?

if only i could do it all over again

    if only we all could

i predict Xno will love the investigation stuff and the lead actors and the general gothic horror rough guys vibe but also at times be extremely annoyed by the pretentious philosophizing

I'm hopeful season 5 will be better since it won't be a Season 4 situation where it was already in development when HBO proposed slapping the True Detective brand on it. This season was still fine, but it had a chance to be great and just kind of stumbled.

    same, hoping it'll be better

i mean whatever, in a way i almost don't care if it's bad, just knowing the original showrunner is probably losing his god damn fucking mind over this is amusement enough

He lost control of his own show for a reason.

Pizzolatto found lightning in a bottle with season 1 and couldn't remotely come close to replicating it.
