Good call. Followed the link. Sighed.
I figured out part of it...
I copied C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\27\93.DAT and replaced C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\51\102.DAT with it.
I was left with a Hume M head on a mithran body.
Now I just need to find and replace the body files and I'll be set.
Been a while sinced I was messing with dat swapping, but I don't think you can just mix them like that, Character appearance is split between different DATs: head(s), upper body/lower body and animation. Also every piece of visible gear.
By replacing files you are going to likely mess your installation up. The plugin will do everything for you on the fly, and afaik it is the only way
Unfortunately, plugins are not an option for me at this time. I'm playing on a private server, and most plugins are untested or the tested ones are broken.
I'm sure there are individual files for the hands, arms, torso, legs, feet, etc. and there's probably a file or two that says how they're supposed to interact. The plugins view and replace these files over top of the game, so some sort of interaction exists. I just need to know what files these plugins view and replace, and my quest is over.
Did you give a shot at wardrobe already? It doesn't interact with the server, just changes the race value in memory. If that works will save you a lot of headaches.
Kinda. I tried it before I had the client stable but I haven't tried it since. 30 minutes after I successfully logged on, something crashed the server and I spoke up about having previously used Wardrobe and was reprimandedI won't try it until it's confirmed to be working.
