EAEWSUGBDBGUABGIBAGNRIKGN trader finally showed up. bought three cows, all i could afford. POWER GOES OUT.
now i get to see how much progress i lost.
Husband was working on a town and noticed this:
Humbert livin' the dream.
Awesome haha! Finally got to put in a few hours tonight. Loving every minute of it so far. Got a nice village of 44 adults and 11 kids now. Things are looking pretty good, very happy with the purchase.
lol nice. once i had this 80 year old hunter living all by himself, even though other houses were crowded. i figured he was probably a pervert or something.
turns out it auto-saved as the trader was making his way down the river. this time i saw him coming, managed to get a few coats and steel tools into the trading post, in addition to the other goods i had, to try to buy more cows. except this time he had apple seeds. i was just barely able to afford them, so now i've planted some orchards. i'm a bit disappointed in farmers; i figured they should work kinda like specialized laborers, just tending to the orchards as needed without being assigned to a specific one. but no, my tiny little 4x4 orchard requires the same manpower as a 15x15 orchard. oh well.
anyway, found another exploit in the process of all this: if you see the trader coming, save. then you can reload until you get a product you like. if you want. i'm sticking with apple seeds. hoping i'll be able to stock up a buttload of ale and trade it for lots of new goodies. ideally, i want some sheep and some wheat. then i'll have all the basics.
I can't seem to support my stone and iron needs mid game. It becomes less and less desirable to search the field for it, but quarries and mills are so cumbersome. I have no idea how to fund more building production T_T.
foresters gather iron and stone as well as lumber, but only within their circle. i'd imagine if you disable "cut" they'll focus on planting and rocks. Or just rocks, if you disable planting too. otherwise... i guess use quarries and mines and just don't expand very fast. i'm on year 23 with ~55 citizens. i've been at ~55 for like 8 years now, lol. between stone and labor shortages, i generally only get one non-house project done a year. houses i can build rapidly, but... don't build houses rapidly. slow and steady seems to be a good strategy.
anyone else getting incorrect notifications? i have 5000+ food but i keep getting the "low food" notification, and I keep getting the storage notification even though i have a completely empty barn.
edit: well i'm pretty sure i figured out the food notification thing. i'd set my limit to 100k, so naturally 5k food is "low" now. guess i'll have to settle for a more reasonable cap!
Getting more stone is kinda rough. I built a quarry fairly early, spent a lot of time manually clearing land as far as I could go without having people dying on the way back and always buy stone/iron every time a trader shows up with some. I still run out every now and then, but that seems to help.
I'd do it if I saw the need for it, but so far, it doesn't really seem worth it at all. At ~320 people I'm still at 4.5 stars avg health with just farms/hunters/gatherers/livestock. I actually skipped chicken too on the livestock for the same reason, food/worker ratio is way better with sheep and cattle.
For trading, I just trade firewood. Early on supply is a bit rough, but once things stabilize a bit, 3 forester lodges get you like 800 logs a year, and I'm pretty sure you get multiple firewood per log. I just bought 16 cattle worth of wood and I still have a bunch left, lol.
Wool Coats are great too. If you have a few 20x20 sheep pastures you'll end up with more wool than you know what to do with - way more than the leather from cows/hunting (my pastures are making ~25 leather/year, compared to ~95 wool/year).
That happens to orchards too. It's even worse when you get infestations: for farms you just harvest early and switch the crops around. On orchards you have to chop the whole thing down and wait however many years for the trees to grow again.Originally Posted by Jaybar
Finally got my Firewood/Herb trading empire rolling. As Kaelan said, it's rough at the start but now it's producing enough at a constant rate. I accidentally built my first Trading Post on a lake...thankfully since it was connected to a rive off to the side, a Trader still came.
Does anyone know if the game speed multiplier has any affect on how long Traders/Nomads will stay before they leave? I've never seen Nomads leave the Town Hall, but I'd assume they would if you left them there long enough. From what I've noticed, Traders stay about 1-2 minutes in 10x speed, so I usually just pause the game while I make my trade, un-pausing when resources are being gathered for the Trading Post.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game very much! I do wish there was a 15x/20x speed multiplier at times.
Traders always stay for one season. If they arrive Early Spring, they'll leave Early Summer.
what happens to a pasture if you take away a herdsman? do your animals die or will it just stop producing from them until you reassign a herdsman?
disasters keep wiping out my work force but my pastures are a bit out of the way so my herdsmen always live and i would like to reassign them during my rebuilding phase
Thats good to know. When I have 10k food but only 19 citizens it would be nice to not have 3 of them locked up herdsmaning
I am horrible at this I think. I can't seem to do anything to get enough food and start having mass die offs about year two.
Have you tried starting off with a forest node as early as you can? I haven't had any problems as long as I get a fully-staffed gatherer going early, plus a fishing dock and hunter's lodge soon after.
*edit* Oh yeah, AWESOME seed. Start up a new game on this seed and check out all the space you get .... it's crazy.

Do the other options impact the terrain that much when borrowing a seed? Because I actually kinda like Large Harsh.
Also, seconding "build a forest hub." Idk much about livestock, since i haven't gotten any yet, but Gathering Huts and Hunting Lodges are fantastic for food gathering. Throw in a forestry to collect materials... great stuff. I build herbalists too, but honestly i've never seen my citizens use any herbs. Ever. So i usually only keep the one nearest my town manned, and then only when i don't need workers elsewhere. Initially I max out the labor capacity on the huts lodges and forestry, to build up a stockpile, but once I start to expand with more hubs I leave the forestry and lodges at 1 worker and the huts at 2. Huts provide a nice variety of food, so your citizens stay happy and healthy. So, when starting a new city, I suggest you get a gathering hut and at least one other source of food built and fully manned by the first winter. Also at least one house. Depending on the difficulty, you may also need a woodcutter.
Also, with the weather and crops, what do you guys mean by early freeze? Early in spring, or early in fall? Anyway, I'm pretty sure orchards don't die to early freezing (i just had what appeared to be early freezes but they're fine- trees are tough, they don't die in winter), but I could see their yields dropping dramatically.
Edit: I'm actually less than impressed with fishing docks. My first few tries I started with a fully manned fishing docks as my food source, but it didn't bring in enough to survive the first winter, even with a fully manned hunting lodge helping. And it ate up so much of my resources to build! I keep 6 of them manned with 1 worker each, but really that's just for added food diversity (and also symmetry). The vast majority of my food supply comes from the huts and lodges. I think, though, that with a fully manned gathering hut to help, a fully manned fishing dock might be enough to get you through the first winter. On Hard, anyway.
I was really just trying out "Mild" climate to see if I could eyeball the difference (I can't so far). I usually leave everything but the map size on whatever is default.
Re: the fishing dock thing, the amount of water within the fishing dock's circle of influence seems to greatly affect how much product you get from it. My second town had a strange river formation next to a lake, where the river made a U shape at the very end before going into the lake. I put a fishing dock there so the lake was on one side, the bend in the river in front of it, and the river down the other side. It made a TON of fish every season.
What they mean by early freeze is, you don't really expect a freeze until early winter. But sometimes it can come as early as mid-autumn, and when it comes, crop fields (and possibly orchards?) that haven't been harvested will lose their product very quickly. It just disappears.
Okay. That's kind what I thought, but I wasn't sure. I know a bit about plants... but not much.
I'm thinking I might start a new village. There are a few things I don't really like about the way i did this one, and I think I can do better. Might check out that seed, too.
