Gaming & Levels Of Aggression - Help Please

Hi All,

My Fiancee is currently in her final year of her Psychology degree and as such she is in the process of putting together her thesis. She has picked to research gaming and levels of aggression. She would very much appreciate if you would take 8-12 minutes of your time filling out this survey as it will be invaluable to the completion of her thesis.

That survey has a few problems. There are formatting issues on the second to last page, and I found that the first page's second section would have been better answered with yes or no questions.

Also, I didn't see any way to infer the gender of the participant, which will be a major confounding factor when comparing it to any control population. If she intends to collect her own control population, she needs to make some way for them to take the same tests (like an "I don't play videogames" option).

I appreciate that the time estimate was correct. Nothing drives me crazier than when people say the survey takes 5 minutes, and i'm there for 15-25minutes.

Those questionnaires were kinda cat though, I'd question the validity/reliability of whatever they're measuring. I'd also make sure to note that somewhere that since participants are told that the study is measuring 'excessive gaming' and 'aggression' that it would probably illict some defensive bias like when you are measuring 'excessive drinking' and alcoholism ( I'd suggest looking at the literature to see how researchers control for this bias in those research realms).

I took the survey. It was interesting. I didn't really like the section on my top 5 most played games. Most of my top most played games I played a long time ago and don't play anymore so they did not have much relevance to the survey. I feel like it would be better to ask a question that targets more recently played games.

Filled it out. Grew up on FPS games and shit's naturally competitive. Anyone that takes it too seriously it guaranteed to blow a gasket at one point or another.

My little outbursts are much less common now than when I was say 16. Learned to laugh at the game more than I get angry at it.

I can see further down that this seemed to be a No Script issue but many thanks for taking the time to fill it out either way. Ill be sure to pass on the comments. She was very specific about what sort of information i put in the post and what was asked of people. Im not too familar with the area of psychology etc but im sure she will appreciate the time taken to give feedback.

It did go through the lecturers at her college for prior sign off so if it is something that she is concerned about im sure she will raise it with them incase things like that were missed though.

I told her exactly this as well. I said you know after i filled this out i put in the original FPS game i ever played (Rainbow Six 6: RVS) and FFXI which I wouldnt have played alot in the last year even but she said that was fine but ill pass on the comments. Thanks as well for taking the time.

section 3 is really wonky. a lot of these are yes/no questions, and others aren't very... precise. for example... i know exactly why i feel bitter sometimes. its actually pretty obvious, really.

also, my top 2 games played are XI and WoW, by a pretty huge margin. I haven't played either game in quite some time. XI was 2 years ago, WoW was... idk, whenever the Landfall patch hit. I unlocked that new pvp daily hub and nope'd the fuck out. so... dunno what that'll do to your data.

Ye thanks for filling it out either way! Im not too familiar on the process etc but what she told is that this is from a collection of published surveys that have been reviewed and approved by differ ethics committies / lecturers and some have been used in published papers. She then put different pieces together to tailor her piece and put it across the ethics committe and her lecturer in her college. She recieved no negative feedback but ill definately feed back what people have been saying so it doesnt hurt any results in the long run!

She played WOW for a bit and some others games here or there but doesnt play a whole lot. But as i mentioned she didnt pick the individual questions herself it was put together from previously published surveys that have been used for other students PHDs / published papers etc. As this is only degree level that is the way it is done from what she tells me. Over here anyways.
