    Gaming laptop under 1k?

Finally found a excuse to get a gaming laptop, since my macbook is shitting the bed slowly. So i've been looking around and found this

Heard the SLI 750m's actually are not that great, so I was wondering what a better option would be thats under 1k?

    thanks

Is there any reason in specific why you want a laptop? Unless you're traveling a lot with it and want/need the gaming while you're traveling. It might be cheaper and better to build a PC and get a cheap laptop for other things.

I was going to suggest this http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-N550JV-DB...qid=1391140935

except yours version has the same except SLI'd. I really wonder what sort of heating issues it'll run into

I looked around and I really can't find anything that would beat that with the SLI. I think that's a solid choice so long as you actually need that much power in your laptop. If you don't play a lot of very recent games, you could probably get by with less.

A lot of traveling, already have a custom built desktop.

Think the y510p is the way to go while it's on sale then, just gotta wait for that tax return to come in.

    Thanks guys

Depends on what games you're looking to play. Of course 750's are shit, even in SLI. The x80 is high end, x70 is mid, x60 is low, x30 is desktop, so you're only a step or two above a workstation. Plus it's a mobile card at that.

750s are among the better laptop options. The goal is to have a laptop that doesn't cook itself, and 750s are a solid compromise. If you wanted it to die within a month, wtf are you getting a laptop for anyway?

My older brother got a sager some time back. Was a 12" laptop with an i7 and a nv 650m in it I think. Since it had a 1366x768 screen, it ran near everything at max. There's a problem with this though: the laptop, at idle, normally ran at 60C. Idle, 60C. This was normal for the machine, as I checked notebookreview.com about it. When gaming, it would normally reach 90C-100C, and there was nothing you could do aside from lower settings, cap framerates, or rip it apart and no longer have a laptop. It pushed so much damn heat.

Things like the touchpad and some keys will stop working, not to mention some artifacts crop up after a while. He's pissed but it's out of warranty, so not much else he can do. He travels a lot so he couldn't carry a desktop with him, but the 12" was really nice for the portability. It's just a bad idea to get high end hardware in too small a package. He bought a surface pro2 and was pretty happy with it, even if it can't game well. Most things on low to get decent fps, but he's much happier since it's smaller and far, far cooler.

Not to say whatever you're going to choose will meet the same fate, it shouldn't since they're larger and newer, but bare in mind the purpose. Are you just going to throw it away after a couple years, or are you going to try and keep it running for 5-10+ years? Will you be happy with something that could very well burn your lap? Can you deal with the amount of heat these will push out (it's very noticeable in confined spaces)?

Also check notebookreview.com about your machine for any gotchas or fixes. I wish I did this before my brother got the sager... though it was a damn beast of a sub-notebook. I might be able to salvage it, but it'll hardly be portable anymore, so it's main purpose is pretty much gone.

So tax return was slightly better than I thought, and will probably be spending $1200-$1300 on a laptop.

From looking things up it appears a 765m would be alot better than 750m SLI, any other cards better than a 765m in the $1300 price range?

That's generally what you're going to be looking at for that price range.

If you're in that price, I'd recommend a Asus G series. I believe the Best Buy version of the G750 is right around 1300, and at least on the last few revisions the only difference from the pricier versions is usually only one disk drive, no Blu Ray, and maybe less RAM. Which are all things you could change out later if you wanted.

Gonna go look at one in person, kinda intimidated by the weight of most 17" laptops lol

They're heavy no doubt, but I've gotten used to it over the years. Had a G73 for a couple years and swapped it out for a G75 awhile back. Most annoying part is getting a backpack that fits, but most Swissgear ones will fit assuming you don't want to look like a jackass rocking an obvious gaming backpack.

Wouldnt larger laptops be better in use? While they might be heavier they're generally longer as well so wouldn't having one make the heat distribution better and run into less cooling issues?

for 17" laptop, anyone have experience with CyberpowerPC laptops?

I know their desktop builds are pretty decent, but I didn't even know they made laptops. Looking at this one:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...708&CatId=3998

Generally yes. It's pretty standard in my experiences for 15" laptops to use a shared heatpipe for the CPU and GPU, whereas the extra space in a larger laptop affords more space for cooling.

Assuming there aren't any build issues with it, that CyberPower laptop is downright nasty with that rebate thrown in.

Unless I'm missing something, it's cheaper at their site; $9 more up front but comes with another $100 mail-in rebate. Upgrade the 1TB HDD from 5400rpm to 7200rpm will save you $4, then upgrade the ram to 16GB from 8GB ($90). Nets you a bigger hard drive and saves $5.

Then take another 5% off with "EG2014" (discount code for Evil Geniuses fans on $1299+ CyberPower purchases)

Looks like tigerdirect changed it, and its -$300 instant instead of mail in rebate.

    *edit*

However your right, after the mail in rebate right from cyberpower I can get a 1tb 7200 RPM HDD and a blu ray drive and save $50.

Thanks for the coupon code also

Np. If you want though, you can tweet @CyberPowerPC that @EvilGeniuses @Gredival helped convince you to buy a Fangbook.
