    100% disk/memory usage (Windows 8.1 Pro)

    Long story short:

Every now and then, and by that I mean several times, every single day pretty much, one of the laptops at work decides that RAM and DISK activity are at 100% and stays that way.
It slows the systems to a crawl.
As far as I can see, no processes (taskmgr/process monitor) are actually claiming all these resources, using RAMMAP the nonpaged pool is massive, but it doesn't show anything actually claiming it.

my google-fu has shown me that it is not an unknown issue, and lead me to tinkering with virtual memory and start-up files, but none of the suggested solutions have shown any results for me.
nada comes up on chkdsk. I've reinstalled all drivers, my next step is a full wipe & reinstall, which isn't that big a deal, but I would like to determine what exactly is going on.

    Halp!

If it really doesn't show up in task manager or process monitor yet uses full cpu/etc, the system might very well be compromised. Be sure that processes from all users are being shown (I don't think this is default). Take it off the network, reboot, and see if it still goes nuts.

Wound up just wiping the whole thing, as much as I'd like to tinker and figure it out, not enough hours in the day!

Wiping it was probably for the better. It could be a virus, but it also could be outlook not connecting to exchange or some stupid shit. Just start over.

It's for the best. If it actually was a virus, you'd have had to do this anyway to be certain it was eliminated, since fuck taking chances if you're at a business.

Not sure what supplementary hardware you might connect to it, but with my old Razer mouse, there was an issue with the accompanying driver/program that resulted in copious page fault bloat to the point my system would start encountering memory errors without periodic reboots. Getting an update to the program fixed it, but it boggle me for quite a while since I didn't really think my mouse would be fucking up the system.

Anyway, if the problem winds up repeating after the reformat, might be worth considering if you're connecting other shit to it.
