Not a complaint, just a question about bad lag?

Just got a new place with a new modem (culprit?). I've been experiencing rubber-band lag later at night in FFXIV but early in the morning it's okay. I have time warner cable, who i had before the move, but a different modem. Below is my ping test to the server I play on. I am from NC. I tried posting a tracert but since it had url's in it i couldn't post it. All other online games work fine, and I am hardwired to my modem. Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance.

Yep, three of them do. Again, I've been playing this game with the same ISP about 5 miles away from my current place with no issues. Only thing that has changed is location and modem. I am just wondering if calling my ISP would even be an option, given that they normally do not know what they are talking about haha.

Doesn't matter. There is a recent known issue with Level3 throttling people's connections.

Try a trial version of battleping, pingzapper, and/or WTFast to see if any of these help the issue.

So does this mean it is not my ISP? it actually seemed to start after the last maintenance.. But not everyone in my fc has it. Is this something my ISP could fix or that SE could fix with an update? Oh.. I have NO issues in the morning. Thanks for all the replies!

I'd just suggest you use battle ping for the rest of your time playing FFXIV. I didn't need it until verizon oversold their bandwidth in December but ever since then I need it every single time I log in to even play. It sucks to have to use an outside service but if that's what makes the difference between me being able to play at all or not, I'd rather just pay the 5 a month until a solution is discovered.

I don't know, but I would do a free trial of one of the programs I listed above to see if they help. If they do, I'd say it's level three because of this jump you listed: 14 106 ms 95 ms 212 ms ae-5-5.car1.Montreal2.Level3.net [4.69.141.5]

Insofar a lot have reported to level3 who have basically said "fuck you." And a lot have complained to SE who has remained silent about the whole matter.

From what I understand, it's nothing you or your ISP can fix. SE needs to work with whoever owns that IP and figure out how to make it not throttle the connections going through it. It's kinda weird though as when I lag I ping the server and I can see that it's going through there and that's where I'm getting hung up at but then some days I don't lag at all, kinda like what you're saying is happening to you in the mornings. I don't know all that much about IP traffic and routes but I would assume for some reason it takes a different route when we're not lagging

I did the trial for Battleping, then immediately purchased three months worth. Night and day...all my lag was gone.

I see your experience ended up being the same as mine... It's crazy how much of a difference it makes.

Also I used newsgroups/usenet for many of my downloads still, and I would have many issues with that as I use a few netherlands servers from NYC/US that need to use ipv6. Those would crap out often.
Since on Timewarner, those have been smooth.
Fios in general has odd issues but they will never own up to them. i think if you check dslreports message board you'll see all sorts of weird issues.

As for going through your pc, I used to do stuff like this a few years ago.
Offhand I'm going to say you probably need a 2nd NIC/ethernet card for the pc.
Modem goes to pc, run the software, then should be able to tie up the 2 NICs to use 1 ip address. Then that 2ndary connection goes out to the router/hub.
From there you may have more issues like DHCP and what not.
If you have an all in one modem/hub/router, then youll probably need another one to split that up.
OR 2nd thought, the 2nd NIC card and that you could maybe use with a crossover cable to the PS3 and again, bridge the connections or something like internet connection sharing.

FiOS was good to me for so long. Between this shit and throttling Netflix and basically making streams 240p, they can go suck a dick.

I just want to say thanks for all the replies. Had I not started this thread, I wouldn't have tried battleping...It does suck to have to pay the little bit extra a month, but since ffxiv is my go to game, it's kind of a lifesaver haha.

Wtfast has a free trial if you want to use that for a while. Unlikely that SE will fix this, but you can switch over to wtfast for the same price afterwards.

The worst part about battleping/WTFast is that, once you max out the content, you realize you're paying an extra 10 bucks a month so you can use it for 2 hours a week clearing all of your weekly stuff.

Such a shame. I'm on Time Warner and everythings been fine, until last night. I forgot about these threads and need to confirm if Level3 made it in there.
But been wanting fios because TWC is absolute trash in every other category. Cable boxes randomly freeze, guide sticks on screen, channels go out, box randomly shuts off, time will be wrong, etc.

Battleping is $5.45 a month. Yea is sucks, but it works. I've also heard it being better than wtfast. And if you "max out" all the content, that's assuming you have leveled every job and every discipline to 50. I have not. Right now it is definitely worth it.

It depends on where you are and what's causing your lag. For me it was the other way around. Best to experiment until you find what works best for you.
