Thanks guys! I started my 4th character on Shiva in 2012 and by that time it seemed the server was pretty quiet. I recall reaching out to TheEnd for a merc job as I played mostly solo but they said at that time they rarely merc'd anymore. While Shiva was quiet, it was still a hell of a lot better then my time on Siren!

Even when I was in supposedly the second most powerful LS on Siren back in the 75 days I had a terrible time as it was your typical leader+friends got most of everything while most of the LS kissed ass hoping to get something one day. I'm a competitor and I always put my best effort forward which is why FFXI became so frustrating for me. Like so many others I'd grind and grind, do every LS HNM camp, event, etc, but either lost the lot or someone else always had priority. And again like many others I just don't have the time to do it anymore, but the competitor in me still wants to be the best when I play a game. To hear you can still get pretty darn good gear without having to sell your soul while having a good time sounds very inviting to me.

I'll probably order today and give it the 30 day go round. And Hyperion sounds like a good destination if there is a spot in a LS for me! Regarding paying/registering, if you were banned from XI at any point and use the same credit/debit card will that matter?

@Halion - thanks for clarifying my point, I guess I didn't output it too well the first time around

Regarding this point, there is a topic which was discussed a while back regarding this. I presume you're still playing FFXI now where they have impose an ilvl on items, so I assume you know what ilvl means (item level). To sum up:

SE gives us the ability to play all classes
But, they impose a currency (gear token) cap on how much of the higher level (equivalent to gear dropped from the final instance) your char can obtain a week (was 300, currently 450)
Players that have levelled all classes are unable to gear up alternative classes on the same character to be [more] efficient (competitive?) -- drops from the final instance are very random at best (2 pieces of loot from a potential 18 different pieces of loot; once per week per boss)
This forced some players to level a second char just to play an alt class they would like bring to their group (so they have a seperate token counter)
    > not all players want to level a second char, leads to potential loot drama, etc

Although it hasn't been discussed in a while since patch 2.1 due to an increased variety of activities, it's still a point worth mentioning if you were the type back in level 75 or 99 days that collected full best in slot (BiS) for your main classes or want to be more or less BiS in all classes you play then it's harder to achieve here currently; the same high level token you get here is used to purchase Relic/AF2 armor for your classes.

Case in point, currently it's 450/week
    Body and Leg costs 825
    Hand/Feet/Head cost 425
    Accessories are 375
    Relic Weapon +1 900

So if you were to focus exclusively on one class, assuming you're not doing the final instance, and assuming you want to be fairly casual (no extreme mode trio of prime avatar fights which drops a ring, neck and ring that is equivalent to the ones above, just a variation in the secondary stats; i.e. one might have accuracy whereas the other might have determination) it'll take up to 10 weeks to max out a class.

The accessories share classes amongst roles, so the tank belt would work for both war and pld. The physical dps earrings/bracelets can be used for all classes but is specifically for mnk/drg, but a WAR can wear it if not main tanking for example.

It's worth mentioning in case you find yourself hitting this gating system quickly and then get paralyzed by the lack of choice.

Just wanted to add my own two cents:

The gamepad control scheme is hilariously good if you got used to controller + keyboard in XI. Like on the level of "why the fuck am I not playing all the MMOs with a controller."

Also, while you are gated for the highest spec, most optimum gear, I personally don't think it locks you out of everything else for endgame like some people imply. A lot of the level requirement necessities revolve around having a minimum HP to survive mechanics (and make a mistake or two), but I'm currently looking at my brand new dragoon, which is at 4695HP while wearing 100% non-gated gear. I think with good equipment decisions you can meet minimum requirements on every job for most encounters in the game - you'll just have one (or a few) that are notably stronger, depending on where you choose to focus your gated gear.

Probably depends on your server. I know on Excal it's been a pain in the ass to find a coil group on my alt, FC is trying to recruit like 2-3 more members for a 4th group but until then she's pugin. Most have like ilvl 83 for T1 lol

Just one thing about Hyperion server, it's one of the generally more populated worlds so you might not be able to actually make a character here the day you get it. Not sure if there's a pattern or anything to how the world's character space is freed up.

I recommend you utilize the dungeon guides on youtube. It's always best to walk into it knowing what to expect if you join a dungeon using duty finder, people are not as quick to help/explain it to you like on FFXI.

Also, Gilgamesh not lolHyperion. Legacy servers have a bunch of scrubs from 1.0 sitting on preleveled classes they're terrible at and multitudes of gil. Join a server where you'll be at an economic advantage.

    Bring it on bitches.

Like every server isn't filled with 90% bads and people obsessed with making extreme amounts of imaginary money.

Every time I've made a new char, you can almost always do it during US mornings.

As a side note, I'd be willing to bet that legacy-server new players, on average, have more gil than non-legacy-server new players.

BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO SEE THE ONE-PERCENTERS STROLL AROUND TOWN, SO THERE IS THAT

What are your tome items selling for over there?

Also, no transfers from Legacy to NonLegacy, so there's that too.

2k/ea for most mats. The crafted items vary but lowest for HQ (common accessories) are 30k, give or take 3-5k.

That's the same price on our servers roughly. Not surprising that they would crash to the same prices, but good to know nonetheless.

Besides gamerscape, is there any other wiki like site I can read for basic general information?

Also, Amazon has the digital copy of XIV on sale today for $15. Yesterday it was only hard copy.

You got your standard database, xivdb.com.

As for Basic General Information. I would invest in getting a Linkshell or FC to answer your questions, or just ask here in w/e appropriate thread you can find. The various websites are just too cluttered in my opinion. Looking back at XI Wiki when it was a thing, I find the most useful thing that I used it for, that this game lacks, was detailed information on NM's. Spawn conditions, Drops, maybe a strategy.

Nowadays its all on Youtube, or forums.

I was the exact opposite. I played XI using controller from PC release to about 2011. I started playing XIV on controller, but switched to keyboard and found myself wondering why I ever used a controller.

Does Legacy vs. non-Legacy even matter anymore? I figured server economies would have all reached the same stagnant point at this point of the game's life.

If you're on FiOS, you'll most likely need to cough up for a VPN service, too. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
