Peppers eh? That escalated quickly. It's basically a 1 year, 8.5M deal. He'll probably play a lot of DE in the "elephant" packages. Still had 7.5 sacks last year but he's 34. I dunno. I guess we have 4 solid D linemen now at least (Raji, Peppers, Datone Jones and Mike Daniels) with Matthews, Perry and Mike Neal as OLBs. Hopefully that'll help our pass rushing woes. Gotta figure out safety and center positions now, and maybe ILB.
1 Year 8.5? I saw a reported 3yr/30M, didn't see what was guaranteed though.
Peppers still has some left in him, and he's durable for sure, was a good pick up either way
I think his point is that it basically amounts to a 1yr/8.5m deal - beyond that the Packers can cut him with little repercussion, or keep him around for whatever his number is that second year. NFL contracts are wonky and inconsistent so it's hard to know the true value of a contract until you see the specifics.
How is Jared Allen still available?
Didnt he have a better season than either ware or peppers, and isnt he younger than peppers?
Probably wants retarded amounts of money.
It's 7.5M guaranteed, so if he's cut before the regular season that's what he will get (the cap hit will be spread over the next 3 years - so there will be "dead money" of 2.5M in each of the next two seasons on the Packers cap). If he plays this season, he'll get his 8.5M for the season (which includes all of the guaranteed money) - although I think the cap hit this season will 3.5M, because the other 5M of cap hit is spread over the next two seasons. I don't know the $$$ for next season or the season after, but obviously they add up to 21.5M total - so he'll have to really produce if he wants to be on the team after this year.
So if what most people assume happens happens, he'll play this year, make 8.5M, get cut after the year, and the Packers will have 2.5M in dead cap money the next two years.
That feels... weird. Partially because since when do the packers sign free agents? Partially because its a rival player. Partially because it seems lke a really shitty deal.
I got no room to talk as a ravens fan when it comes to signing aged players but that seems like a lot to pay him even if the strategy is to eat dead money and cut him.
A shitty deal for who?
Look up peppers game logs. If you think that's something to get excited about I got news for you.
Reggie white isn't coming through that door guys
I'm willing to give Peppers some leeway for a down year when he was one of the only people worth covering during the injury parade in Chicago, but the price on him is still way high to me. He'll improve the team, but if GB was going to make the decision to move in on free agency now that the holes are starting to open up on the roster, I'm having a hard time understanding why it was him they decided to spend money on
