I can't deal with shit like this. Can't find parts to repair services? Well no shit you haven't upgraded anything, ever. However, the worst part is the last paragraph for me. Towns can't even upgrade their own shit because of retarded fucking laws.

    http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2...-in-20-states/

List of states that currently have such laws in place, and while the FCC is suppose to do away with those laws I haven't seen any information saying when. Fuck everything about Texas. Bunch of assholes in our government that just love to fuck everyone over.

I just wanted to add something here. I live in Chattanooga, and we have a city provided interwebs, 1 gig up/down for 70 bucks. Sometimes I download things so fast the limiting factor is my harddrive that can't keep up with the write, which is a samsung SSD evo.

Genuinely curious. As an avowed libertarian, does government-run interwebs drive you insane?

I am kind of jealous of this speed, but also not jealous because fuck government run things.

    Not at all.

FYI, EPB fiber is a thriving company with zero tax funding ;/ It's run by the city however, much like it's parent utility company EPB, which is tax funded. Competing against comcast and at&t, who are sucking so hard on the government tit that I fail to see any difference.

Exactly. I live in Huntsville, about an hour and a half from Chattanooga, and we are trying to get the city to do this here. They are currently taking fiber bids from outside companies atm.

I just learned about this (topic in one of my classes currently) and I'm pretty excited to see the result. Comcast has had a stranglehold in my area and most of the surrounding area. I'd love to see some change.

What the regulator has decided to do is preempt state laws that seek to restrict the spread of city-built broadband networks in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Wilson, North Carolina. But the agency also reserved the right to intercede on behalf of municipalities on a case-by-case basis if it thought that local or state governments were getting in the way of improving competition and spreading access to broadband internet.
    http://www.engadget.com/2015/02/26/p...run-broadband/

I forgot to comment earlier, but I read some of the legislation that was passed that prevented these public/city broadband networks, and some of them make mention about how it's forbidden if there's already a broadband option. I wonder how many of those laws became moot when the FCC raised the standard for broadband..

Comcast internet has been having problems in several cities since about midnight CT. For example it was down in my area for 5 hours over night and has since been really slow.

    Right now:

    What it should be:

I'm curious if they're getting ddos'd with a digital protest.

When can we actually see some benefit from this? How long before my suffering ends? Should I just say fuck waiting, and tunnel from my house to the closest fiber backbone and live in a cave there?

Probably a while. With house and senate controlled by the republicans, and an election coming up for the president soon, there is going to be push back.

It's far from over. If a Republican wins the White House, best believe they will let this ruling die right off (unless they are Moderate). Any change won't come until Mid Summer, and by then Comcast, AT&T and Time Warner will go toe-to-toe with the FCC with court challenging.

The *REAL* answer is Google Fiber coming in and completely throwing out the proverbial game board with their own fiber network ambitions. Seriously. Lets be honest, the FCC and these telecom companies are fighting over bare minimum internet speeds and the right to throttle poor people. A powerhouse like Google needs to come in and show everyone that the country should not be striving for bare minimums, especially when we have the power to have MUCH faster connections even at the minimum. This same thing happened when we moved from 28.8/56k to DSL & Cable connections. Also happened when telecom companies fought to block/throttle file sharing programs.

I've been saying this every time the topic comes up, but I, for one, welcome our new Google Fiber overlords.

Yeah, I think the Engadget article I linked is the bigger win. But Sho is 100% right -- the telecom companies are going to challenge this decision, so this is far from over.
