Verizon throttles Santa Clara County Fire department (currently fighting the Medocino Complex Fire, the largest fire in CA history) because they hit their data cap. County fire asked Verizon to remove the throttle because of the current emergency; Verizon requests that County Fire needs to buy a more expensive data plan to remove the throttle.

Verizon has closed the comments on an ad meant to repair it's image after the throttling of fire fighter's data back in August. Extended ad features endorsements from east coast fire fighters.

That sounds about right. I am on satellite internet which sucks to begin with but recently Exede started overselling their circuits and now even though I am supposed to get 25mbps (at 800ms latency) I am lucky to get 10-12mbps. ISP's do that on purpose. Also that is why all the contracts and all the advertisements say "up to" in front of the speeds.

Read the fine print. Pretty much all of them give a range of speeds starting at something along the lines of friggin dial-up speeds up to the advertised. Now on the surface it's like well sure they can't control some factors which can lower your speed... on the other hand most of them have varying plans including higher speeds at the flip of a switch easily countering those up to a point. Extra fun if you run speed tests thru your ISPs tester (if it has one) it will almost always come out decently higher than any others including ones that use more optimal points that should get higher readings

Is that consistent or is that during peak usage hours? ISP's make money by overselling a circuit. If they have 100mbps worth of bandwidth they will sell "70mbps" internet on that circuit to 5 houses. If everyone is using it at the same time you will get massive slow downs. The only way to get the actual speeds you pay for is to pay many thousands of dollars for business class internet which is not shared with anyone and you are guaranteed your bandwidth block.

i pay for 50 down 5 up. i usually get 45 down 3 up. on that test i got fucking 6 down LOL.

iirc a lot of the speedtest sites are prioritized by your ISP. It is the trouble with speedtest sites.

Because very few people pay for as much up as down, it isn't really possible to set up an unbreakable benchmark.

On my 50 down/5 up I get 65 down/6 up.
