How the hell do you all use so much data. I work in IT and I work from home and my kids want to stream netflix, hulu, and disney + all the time. We use about 100gb of data by the 20th of each month. My guess is we use about 200-250gb each month by the end of our billing cycle. I don't know for sure because our cap is 100gb each month then our speeds get throttled and traffic is prioritized behind others. No overage costs because we have an "unlimited" plan but it sure does slow down.

I really hope Starlink expands its service to cover central coast CA soon.

I'm stuck on DSL in Vermont. I work from home, our oldest (14) is remote learning on Wednesday, and in school the 4 other days, our youngest (10) goes to school 5 days a week.

It looks like they might both be remote full time starting soon.

Literally no other option unless I want to pay 600 dollars to have them install lines for fiber. It would be worth the upgrade but its a pretty good chunk of money to come up with.

This is 99% of my data now. Before my 4k TV i would avg 700-1.1 Tb, now almost 4Tb avg. We ended up just dumping the cable package and going unlimited. I also now fully Tor ren t forever when i used to only get about 1/4 ratio. If i'm paying for unlimited, i'm going to use it.

I still like physical media for all Blu-ray and 4k stuff...and have a nice 48in TCL Roku in the office. No need for me to actually download stuff to the PC shows wise. But speaking of shows and movies...I am running out of space on my 2nd shelf...may need to get a 3rd.

Streaming services cycle stuff in and out, rights get bought and sold. All I know is that I have what I want long after amazon stops hosting it.

I used to feel that way, and then 1tb drive into saving my shit over a decade ago I realized I never rewatched any of these fucking movies or shows and if I do, they're an easy legal stream, it even illegal stream, away. Dealing with storage for 90% of shows I'll watch once and never again was just not worth the hassle.

As a hobbyist thing I get it tho. But practically, it just isn't worth it for me anymore.

I have about 9TB worth of stuff atm and am currently rewatching all of the original law and order for the like 10th time, something that I can't do on any streaming service I have. Was also watching Mythbusters.

Top Gear is a great example of why I'll never stop carrying these things around though. If you're a fan and have ever tried to watch it all the way through on amazon I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It is a clusterfuck and spread between 3? different paid services and the specials are broken up and are a different paid service. It is absolute bonkers. Not to mention how heavily censored some seasons are.

It's not bad once you set it up properly. You can go all the way with stuff like Radarr where you just tell the program what movie/show you want and quality levels and it will automatically download the best versions that match your criteria, and if that's all running on your server then Plex/Emby will just automatically add it in.

I prefer to still find the stuff manually, but then I literally just drop the files into filebot to properly name and sort, then drag and drop the folders onto my server. Few seconds later it's up in emby and ready to watch. My server is around like... 400 shows and 1300ish movies? Around 13Tb of stuff.

Also, there's some good quality Darkwing Duck out there. Mine are ripped from the Disney+ copy and then sorted out to the proper order, which again was done automatically with filebot.

Don't forget about the censoring going on with certain shows (always sunny, etc), where even if they have the show you want to watch, some episodes are missing. I'm sitting on about 20 TB of space (Work in IT so i tend to bring home stuff that would be trashed). Anytime a show gets something pull for one reasons or another I tend to grab that show.
