Oh boy..a post that brings me back to posting on here.

    http://www.mobygames.com/

^ for those of you that want to remember some games of the past.

I really do not know if I can list a top 5 because I have played games from pretty much every system that has ever come out. Pong cabinet, Atari 2600, Mac, Intellivision, Coleco, Apple II, Arcade, PC, Amiga 2000, Master System, NES, Genesis, SNES, Turbografix, Saturn, Dreamcast, Sega CD, PS1, PS2, PS3, N64, Gamecube, Wii, XBOX....egads sometimes I am ashamed at how many games I have played lol.

    Some nostalgia games first:

Anyone remember a game called Jump Man ? As a kid wasted so many hours on this game and got my aunt to break the sound barrier with her yelling at me to get my ass outside and play.

Dungeon Master on Amiga2000 was by far one of the most immersive and engrossing grid based rpgs. To this day so many rpgs owe something to this game. My friend and I used to have marathon sessions playing this game for entire weekends to the point where his mom would smack him around she was so pissed he played so much lol. Game was mad hard as we had a *cough* special *cough* copy that had no manual at all. We had to figure out all the spells on our own - some we made up names for them Zokathora spell, Big fucking boom, Mega fucking boom...so good.

Ninja Gaiden (NES version) - I consider this one of the most perfect games ever made. The story, the mechanics, the challenge...all there. I beat this game two times in a row based on a rumor that you would get a second ending different from the first if you played all the way back through after you beat it the first time. Do you guys remember the days when beating a game to get the ending story was what it was all about? Nowadays, endings in games suck. Most of the time they are overblown, way too long, and very badly written.

M.U.S.H.A. - I don't care about Ikaruga being the best shooter ever made. Fuck that. This game did it first for me. Later there was a sequel of sorts called Robo Aleste on Sega CD but it couldn't come close to the original. Epic Metal combined with some intense shootouts.

(in no order) Final Fantasy, FFII, FF7, FFXI, Baldurs Gate 2, Vandal Hearts, FFtactics, shining force, shining force 2, suikoden, xenogears, Kings quest 5, Lunar, Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry 7, Golvelius, sword of vermillion, Legacy of Kain....list goes on and on. So much fun.

Quake2 - fuck this game. Fuck it to eternity. I blew off so much undergrad work just to play this game for an addicting amount of hours every day. A friend and I recorded all of our trick jumps (ala [xeno] clan fame)...and used to LAN it out massively. I do not think there is a single online game where I wasted so many hours (except my next one) perfecting every single aspect of my play online. Q2DM1 (the edge) - most perfect map ever made.

UT99 (referred to the common folk as Unreal Tournament) - This game ate my life. I played competitively on ladders (pgl, ogl, team warfare) in the North American scene (and even against Euros...who are disgustingly good at this game) for about 5 years...give or take some time off. Clans like <BMF>, GF, DD, SyN, |pure|, fP, \DM\, DBS, etc made the game so much fun. If you played in the competition scene you may remember some of these names OverToad, SATAN, Butcher, Xellos, NoMortal, Witchblade etc. I made so many friends and still am good friends with a bunch of these guys(and gurls). Played a bit of 2k3/2k4 but both of those games are pure shite in my opinion - they became a mix of quake/ut which ruined the original feeling of the unreal franchise. Then came along UT3 which brought back the old feel once again...but sadly not the developer support. I was \DM/RaZieL and fp-raz. I have to break out my copy of UT99 again since I see there is still life in it. I play ut3 from time to time now...but servers are basically empty

So many more games to list...just not enough space.

Fucking Timesplitters... I remember for new years 2001 or something me and a friend set the kill limit in multiplayer to 2004 and burnt a line into the disc because of how long we had a first generation PS2 on for. Also the challenges and shit were tons of fun. 2nd game was pretty good too but not as great as the first. The fucking zombie level and there was another one in the future or something where the world was taken over by ducks or some shit with guns..I can't even remember now.

Oh man, where to even begin...

My favorite 2600 game, hands down.

I was very much "tardy to the party" getting an NES, as I didn't get mine till my 8th birthday.

I could not get past this bastard for the longest time! I think I beat him maybe once or twice without the pause glitch.

I remember getting this game for Christmas around the time it came out and my parents would play the SHIT out of it!

One time, my dad got me a SNES game copier that loaded games off floppy disks. It came with like 30 or so games, a few of which weren't available outside Japan at the time. One of them being FF6. I didn't get past Vargas because I couldn't read Japanese and that part told you how to use Sabin's blitz moves.

Even though it wasn't my first online game, PSO will always hold a place in my heart.

Needs more Klax. That was the only game my dad was into, one of those weird unlicensed black cartridges for NES, like Shinobi.

Ahh good ol' Klax. "It is the nineties and there is time for Klax!"

Those guys even had their own version of Tetris, which even had a co-op mode.

    Old Sega Master System nostalgia:

    R-Type
    Side-scrolling shooter, as shown.
Hard, hard game: no saves, most of your craft was a one-hit-point wonder except the detachable Force part which was indestructible, enemies were all over the screen in the latter levels (pictured is the boss of level 1) and dying meant restarting the level without powerups amassed through several levels, so you realistically had to restart from the beginning each time you made a mistake.
    But damn was it fun.

    Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap.
An early RPG with an innovative password-based save system, it operated on the ridiculous (and ridiculously fun) premise of a bog-standard knight-in-shining-armour being "cursed" by a dragon (Mechadragon) after defeating it (you play that in the prologue), cursed into the form of Lizardman.
After that, he had to slay another dragon to regain his human form... but can't reach that dragon's castle as Lizardman, so he goes after a series of dragons (Mummy dragon, Pirate Dragon,...) and through a series of "forms" with differing abilities: from the strong Lionman to the diminutive wall-walking Mouseman to the amphibious Pirahnaman... all that on a great musical score, considering the means of the time.
Much easier than R-Type, though the last dungeon is still quite challenging.

It's cool. I'd join BG to chime in with this thread.

After trying FFXIV for a month it just doesn't do it for me. I've been playing Skyrim, which is fun, but one thing that I absolutely loved about FFXI was Beastmaster. I got the itch, so I installed the game and started poking around private servers. If you've looked in the MMORPG section you'll know Nasomi has created a server based heavily on 75 content. This is a great option for many people that savor that time period and enjoy the old fashion grind. For me personally, I just want to occasionally jump in, exp a bit, and wear some cool gear. I joined a server that you could say is pretty much fun mode where everything is made easy. I've only played for a short period, but for my needs it's perfect. I missed out on a lot of gear and what not, so to be able to go to AH and say buy a Toci's Harness is pretty cool to me. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me.
