    rofl Good times, good times.

But yeah, I, for one, am worried about the transition from PS3>PS4. This leaves the Devs unable to ever (logically) drop support for the PS3 version. How this will play out with eventual upgrades to DX11 and what that will mean for limitations based on the PS3/PS4 hardware, has me a tad bit worried.

I like that they are moving forward with the PS4 version, but I don't want there to be LoLPS4 limitation crap all over again that won't let us have X game mechanics (looking at you limited inventory from XI) because of Memory limitations. I mean sure PS4 does not for PS2 make, but we can still to this day and forever make a Console vs. PC comparison.

    More on topic.

I'm actually looking forward to how they implement the Wet effect. That could look horribly overdone.

Did you mean PS3 here? I dunno if we should worry about memory issues with PS4 for a long time?

It's certainly warranted given the history but I don't think it's going to be a huge huge deal. I mean, DX11 in particular is going to be completely irrelevant. The graphics engine is largely done and dusted for the PS3. There are already predefined models/formats for animations and effects and motion. Adding DX11 means that it'll take more work to produce these, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the PS3 can't process them. If it comes right down to it honestly, they might just make the PS3 drop "precision" on data packets.

For example - lets say they add a back slot and decide to render capes. PS3 will still receive the equipment data in object packets for characters, but it'll just ignore the cape slot when building models in memory, and PS3 users won't see capes. They'll still show up in the UI panels.

The rigidity of the PS2 was partially due to architecture and partially due to archaic design built around orthogonality of storage. The PS3 was a sufficient leap in architecture and the new engine a leap in design philosophy that I don't think it's going to be a problem to keep it as a "lower class citizen". An example of one of the things that likely would have broken the PS3 if this consideration had not been made ahead of time - adding hairstyles.

We talk a lot about RAM and resolution issues holding the PS2 back, but something I don't frequently hear people talk about is the modem. The game still supports dialup connnections. If we want to talk about limiting inventory because of system limitations, that is most likely your biggest culprit right there.

Wasn't the PS3 just as much of a bitch to program for because of the cell processor?

They'll drop PS3 support soon enough, that's why they're offering the free upgrade. They want console players to switch to something else and the PS4 is the ideal choice for this. Given the console's popularity and the free upgrade I'm quite sure we won't see "PS3 limitations" as an excuse. PC is going to have more tools anyway, they'll simply not implement those features on PS3.

Titan Ex isn't that bad on PS3 if you memorize everything. It's not like Twintania where things just don't show up or show up a second later than for everyone else.

lol I don't pay for my wins

I've never had the issues most PS3 players complain about except loading times on CSs so I can skip them. I bought a SSD not too long ago for 1 of my PS3s but I still clear these with no issues on the non-SSD one

They've already dropped PS2 support in the West for XI. If the PS3 is going to hold the game back they'll get rid of it. It's so easy to switch to another platform anyway, people will complain as usual and then move on to PC or PS4.

Dropping support in the west for FF11 really doesn't change anything since they still have to work around its limitations in Japan.

Okay, I'll reiterate from before: Expecting PS3 players to drop $400+ for a new system just to keep playing XIV is a surefire way to lose console players.

Well, I think lots of console players switch to new generation with time (sooner or later) and they will definitely be happy that they can convert their game for free. This time around S-E might think it might be worth to risk losing some players instead of limiting their game in the long run and ending with annoyed and also somehow smaller community because of that.

They won't be dropping PS3 support anytime this decade. The only limitations the PS3 has on xiv development is the consideration of the x720 resolution. Problems with object loading isn't a limitation related problem, it's SE being fucking retarded and not setting priorities on objects/models. The current player model should always be loaded. Focus target should be second. Current target should be third. Party members and engaged enemies should be fourth. Unengaged enemies can be fifth. And then everything else can be after.

PS4 won't introduce any limitations. The architecture is basically the same as a general computer's architecture, and following suit it has plenty of memory. You'd have to be more worried about lower end computers factoring into limitations, honestly.

    A) I don't have to memorize anything on Titan Ex and still dodge everything on reflex.

    B) Get a SSD
