If you were looking at the FR-S you may as well look at the Subaru BRZ too since they're the same body (Scion just puts their own engine in the BRZ, basically).

Wait what? The BRZ and FR-S share the same drive train completely. Subaru implemented Toyota's direct injection system into their Boxer engine. The major differences are exterior and interior options.

As someone who who lives in Chicago's south side (the nice island of Hyde Park that is), and a dodge fan, don't get a Dart. Are you looking outside right now? You want to drive in that shit in a tiny little car and get stuck every .3 miles? I had a fixation on driving one for a bit, but I hardly fit in one. (Im too tall) and I didn't want to drive in the snow in one. I didn't want to get a huge SUV because of Chicago parking, so I picked something in the middle. I got a 2013 Dodge Journey

Ya, I'm a Dodge guy. My dad works for Chrysler, so I get a nice discount. If I got a car now, i'd get the new Cherokee. I can't recommend Dodge for reliability or the even the salesroom experience, because both have proven to be garbage. What I can tell you though, over the past couple of years their big focus has been reliability. They've seen these Toyotas all over the road now that last 10+ years and taken note; No one wants to buy a piece of shit that will crap out in 5 years, just as you pay off your loan. (E.G. I'm looking at you Dodge Caliber with your crappy transmission)

Yeah, I am really looking into the Kia Optima now. It has pretty much everything I want. I will be test driving one soon. Streets are really f'd up right now. I intend on getting Winter tires for whichever car I buy.

I actually saw a Kia Optima 2013/14 on the way home today. Looked sweet.

I am going to try and see if 2015 model will be out soon or even that much of an upgrade. I read onsome website that the 2015 model will be a redesign.

I thought the shells were identical? Oh well, I can't afford the insurance on either of them so it hardly matters, lol. I thought Scion was just buying the bodies and putting them on their own chassis.

Nope it's essentially the same car through and through. The bumpers, headlights, spoilers, badging, etc are different on the outside as well as inside options like the dash, nav, heated seats, leather seats. The rest of the car is pretty much identical.

It's like a Tahoe vs a Yukon. Essentially the same car but with different styling

Winter tires are better in colder weather as well. I think it's somewhere around 45 F that the rubber on the winters provides better traction on dry road conditions than an all-weather or summer.

EDIT: Googled it to be sure. It's around 45 where all-weather and summers get too stiff, but winter/snows retain the proper softness to grip the road properly.

Yeah you will not wear them out "prematurely" by driving them on dry roads. My snow tires are going through their 4th year of use for me this year. When you factor in how long they will last, the cost is really minimal for the safety and reliability they offer in the snow and cold.

The new Optima I thought would be out already. I've seen commercials for it for months. I'd get the brand new one if you have the option, wait a little if you can. That interior is REALLY nice.

If you want AWD, I would highly recommend that you check out a Forester. The fuel economy is around 90% of a WRX. I would go no farther back than 2009 (the way the doors and window gussets are designed on earlier models cause them to become somewhat noisy when going over 40 mph.) You could easily get a used XT for under that budget, which is fun.

I'm pretty sure there are no new-new Optimas. At best it's a mid-model year change. Fit and finish on Kia and Hyundai cars still aren't up to snuff from what I've seen. Especially now that they're charging about the same or even more than the Japanese equivalents.

And those cross-stitched leather looks really ugly IMO. It's like a wannabe luxury imitation of brands like Bentley.

Not really. You would need to leave them on for a long time for that to happen. And most states require snow tires to be off by mid April. Otherwise they damage the asphalt.

That is diamond stitching and is extremely hot in the automotive world right now. And there is nothing "wannabe" about that interior. It's all Nappa Leather. The only problem Kia/Hyundai have is dealing the "lolKorean Made" stigma from when they made and sold, quite literally, rolling pieces of shit in the 90's. The Japanese car makers went through the same bullshit.

Posted this a while back when someone else was looking for a new ride.

Kia's are in the top three brands that we end up servicing the most. I'm not saying that they are all junk. But based on 14 years of experience with AAA I wouldn't buy one. I also wouldn't buy a Dodge. We release a year end spreadsheet internally. One of the categories is brand serviced most where it breaks down the top 5 brands. After the brands it breaks down the models individually. The Soul did not make it onto the list. But for the last three years Kia placed 2, 3, & 3 on the list. The list usually has either Ford or Chevy as the top two simply due to the sheer volume of vehicles they have on the road. The top makes that we end up towing from Kia are the Sedona, Optima, Cadenza, and Rio in that order.

Not saying all Kia's are shit. But I personally would not buy one. They have improved dramatically, but are still on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to reliability. If you're looking at an Optima I wouldn't even look at anything pre 2010. The first and second generation Optimas(2000 - 2010) have a slew of issues.
