This is the correct answer. Putin wants to maintain the illusion that Russia is a democracy, but it's not. The only reason Medvedev was President for four years was because the constitution limits people to only two consecutive terms, so he was a placeholder for one term.

A friend whose family lives in Ukraine posted this picture on Facebook earlier -- this is the number of people marching in a pro-Russia protest in Simferopol, the capital of Crimea

Her parents might live near there or know someone who took that picture, not actually sure of the source.

Hah. Putin couldn't go full Vlad until after the Olympics were over. As soon as that shit was done and he wouldn't accidentally roll a tank over some other nation's champion the gloves came off and it was time to move out. I'm waiting for some anonymous report about Hinds / Tanks. 'Cause the Russians have never done that before.

Also; Hellmarch is totally on my phone as a ringtone. Because. ( even though the words are German and not Russian... eh )

Saw them too. Shit's getting annoying and it's only a matter of time before red scare 2 comes along.

That's inaccurate. I used to believe it as well, but actually the constitution limited Presidential mandates to 2 terms; consecutive or not.
Putin simply had Medvedev alter the constitution, it's now unlimited I think.

There was another reason as well: appeasing the oligarchs. Medvedev was their man and they'd been nagging Putin for a while, so he threw them a bone.
He eventually regretted it, towards the end of Medvedev's mandate, the two men weren't on very friendly terms anymore as Medvedev started thinking for himself/cutting his strings.

Used to hear same thing said about Saddam Hussein in the 90s. I think the Russian people are the only ones with the authority for that.

What with the Olympics, and the persecution of gay people and now this, russia seems highly keen on showing the world that nobody can stop them.

Some more info from my friend:
The largest independent TV channel has been taken off the air in the Crimea. If Russia has as much support among the Crimeans as it claims, what's the treat of an independent TV channel?
    And also this link:
    http://maidantranslations.com/2014/0...polish-border/
Russia claims that thousands of refugees are fleeing from Ukraine to Russia, but in the video, the border crossing they're using is to Poland. The crossing to Russia is like empty..
