FFXI being the user friendly experience it always has. DirectX 8.1 not found on Windows 8.1.

I just finished installing it, but when I try to launch it, the launcher closes as if it would launch the game, but then opens back up and shows the error:

Terminated as error occurred in FINAL FANTASY XI. Please install DirectX 8.1.(-1)

So I tried to google for DirectX 8.1 wich on the microsoft website, after downloading, says something along the lines of needing windows 98, ME, 2000 to get this.

and on other sources, it's very shady what's going on.

I don't know where to get that direct from MS but the rollup(which that is) should fix the issue. (Filehippo has never done me wrong and is legit) I installed that on my new Windows 7 machine, actually as part of my setup b/c I do play FFXI on it, and it works fine.

Don't let the 9.0c fool you; it's a rollup. Which means it doesn't install directly, since it unzips into a folder, then you run DXSETUP. It also installs all versions of directx from 9.0c backwards. At least in my experience, I don't set up a pc without the rollup.

The official download for directX would be this one. The web installer looks up what versions are already installed and then runs through all missing packages, downloads and installs them.

Ok. Nothing worked. It says I need DirectPlay, but then the thing crashes. Like, the windows thing that tells me I need that crashes. If I try to open task manager to close it, that crashes too. If I click start on windows 8, that crashes too.

I don't know what the fuck is going on, considering I was on windows 8 with the same build 6 months ago and it worked fine.

I guess the only difference is I went from windows 8 to windows 8.1 if that matters.

Ugh, rawr windows 8. (Hate hate hate that) I'll email a friend of mine who swears by it, maybe he'd know something. Give me a few hours to get his attention.

I figured it out. When you update from windows 8 to windows 8.1, you have to activate DirectPlay. I thought it was something you downloaded and couldn't find it anywhere. Turns out, it's just a check box in a very obscure location of windows.

Woa lol. I'll have to remember that, for it might carry to the next version of Windows. (I'm all Windows 8 can eat my pants atm b/c I really hate the interface and it pulls crap like that) If you got a reference where you found it, please pm me with it so when the inevitable reformat comes to upgrade to 9 (I hope that's better than 8) I can enable it right away.

I have a french version, but ill try to translate as best I can:

-Control Panel
-Programs
-Right under "Programs and Functionnality" -- Activate or deactivate windows functionnalities.
-inherited component + sign to expand
-check "DirectPlay"

Where did you get it?

With amazon, it's just install, insert code into Square Enix account, then go. I do not know the other..ways of getting it very well.

I had this same trouble today. If you have the Amazon install, you need to launch playonline so the registry gets updated. If you try to install the expansion before running playonline, it says ffxi isn't installed.

Interesting. I installed ffxi on my windows 8 machine some time back without much trouble. It was the amazon installer (both abyssea edition and SoA installers), which came with the redistributable dx8.1 (though I probably already ran a dx9.0c installer before then, since everything needs it anyway). It went and installed directplay for me when the game popped up (after installing 8.1, asked and I accepted), crashing the game, but worked right after and from then on. Windower had no issue as well. Probably the smoothest ffxi install I've done, even through a windows upgrade. It just worked.

Dunno what to say other than anecdote.
