What kind of specialist should I see?

There is something wrong with my knee, tendon, or possibly something else in my calf or heal. I have had strange sensations (some might call it pain) since Autumn. It got so bad at one point I had to get a knee brace (mobility was very limited, couldn't even move my leg.) I did see a doctor about it although he wasn't a specialist (he was the one who gave me the knee brace.) I was hoping it would eventually go away with the knee brace, but it hasn't. I'm going to go back in although I feel like my time would best be spent with a specialist. I was wondering what type of specialist I should be seeing...

    A PCP for a referral...

Sounds achilles/gastroc/soleus related. Groundbreaking info there, I know.

If you have an HMO or PPO that doesn't require a referral to see a specialist, you're going to end up seeing either a podiatrist or an orthopod that specializes in knee and/or lower extremity. But it's still probably a good idea to see a primary care doc first, you'll just be out a co-pay and/or any coinsurance per your insurance.

If you need a specialist referral than go to the Specialist your PCP recommends.

My wife is a nurse, and said if for whatever reason you are circumventing the PCP she would advise seeing a Podiatrist first. That being said, it's a shot in the dark. You have a slightly greater chance of the pain stemming from a foot injury than a joint injury..... but again it's really a crap shoot. (Hence the strong recommendation to see your PCP first and go on their suggestion.)
