I've watched it twice, one in theater and other on HBO max. I still don't get all the hate, they could have improved but it doesn't suck at all. I watched the original move over 500 times literally, the 2nd and 3rd weren't that great but I liked those too.

Theres literally some bot network trying to take the movie down in reviews and persuading people to not see it.. what a world we're in

Have you ever considered that maybe you just have bad taste?

I mean, I usually like things that aren't popular, so its possible my tastes are very different than most lol. I'm just salty it didn't do well, because I love the first movie so much, one of my favorites for sure. I still don't see how it is considered to be so bad, but thats probably why it has 6/10 on most reviews, it missed something but also did other things ok.

I mean when you admit you watched the first movie 500 times, kinda difficult to take your opinion subjectively

The first movie was groundbreaking in terms of storytelling and visual effects.

The sequels really failed to expand on that and instead focused on campy shit instead of adding to the story. They were decent movies but as sequels they were hardly good.

My guess is they made this in an effort to recapture the spirit of the original movie but basically put the same effort into it as they did the sequels.

Wasn't the game sequel story in this one essentially the story of how this one came about?

None of the simultaneous releases HBO-MAX movies have done super great. Dune made just under 400m in total, which is super low for such a big budget movie (and which I would bet would have gotten 800m+ had it not also been on HBO). But then again the new suicide squad only made 167m which is incredibly low.

In my opinion, Warner Brother's took a gamble but doing simultaneous streams for all of their movies in 2021 and I would be surprised if it paid off. They should have realistically done what Disney+ has done with their movies.

The story is there but I just didn't capture the same feeling as the original trilogy
    Spoiler: show

So basically whenever Trinity and Neo pair up, they end up breaking the Matrix in every iteration. This kind of contradicts the prophecy a little bit because it requires them both even though in the original trilogy it's Neo who meets the Architect. It was a somewhat interesting plot point that the Analyst used the two of them in close quarters to generate massive energy to make up for the lack of output from people being unplugged due to the truce (along with pushing emotions to generate more energy output), but I feel that they could've explored more of that. We just get a quick line about it during the villain speech and that was it. Same goes for the whole comment about people thinking Neo sided with the machines.

It was 3 stories in one and coulda have broken into a trilogy and it would have been for the better. Way too many btw this happened btw that happened, btw this is how it works now. BTWs are always shit storytelling in movies.

It wasn't bad. Just complete shit compared to the original. But so were 2 and 3. Id rank it above the other sequels.

    It definitely felt pointless though

Finally caught this last night using a friends HBO account.

It is much better than 2 and 3, but there is still such a power gap between this and the first one that if this franchise were to continue in some way or form it almost needs to NOT be about Neo and Trinity. We get it, they're the "it". Time to move on.

What I am realizing is that this franchise could become something akin to Friday the 13th, Halloween, Jason, etc in that it just produces some direct to stream tech B movie every few years with different directors and becomes a cult hit in itself outside of the first film.

the base concept of the matrix is definitely cool so when you make short stories that have absolutely nothing to do with the main plot like the animatrix you can have a lot of fun with it, no doubt

I enjoyed it. Liked the smaller stakes of the story, being more of a personal motivation and not "we gotta save the world" again.

Only one thing bothered me, and not sure if it was done on purpose or a genuine mistake.
    Spoiler: show
When the analyst is talking about Neo putting stuff in his Matrix game based on stuff he saw in the real world, such as his cat Deja Vu. But he didn't start seeing him until after the suicide attempt, which was after the games came out. So was it them just trying to be clever, or a hint about what was really going on.

Think i'd of almost preferred a spin-off with new people featuring the machine civil war which sounds way cooler than this turned out. Movie just kinda felt like it existed with no real point beginning to end, retreading a lot of story beats of the first film except with 50 year old main characters replacing amazingly choreographed fight scenes with memorable villains with, uh, Force push?

Like is it an entertaining pop-corn flick that kinda tickles your nostalgia bone, especially if you really loved the originals? I mean sure I could see that in a "Turn off your brain, oooh, pretty lights!" kind of way, but beyond that the movie just was not great. Probably wont rewatch it ever.
