is it still considered natural selection when someone has a heart transplant or takes antibiotics or undergoes chemo? how about man made breeding like ligers when tigers are from asia and lions are from Africa and they are brought together by man. what about if we clone were to say something extinct and bring it back? how is that natural selection? I don't disagree with Darwin, but I think there is artificial selection in addition to natural selection.
You don't understand natural selection.
what ever picture you tried to post didn't show up for me.
ARTIFICIAL SELECTION = The selective breeding of domesticated plants and animals to encourage the occurrence of desirable traits.
NATURAL SELECTION = A process in which organisms with certain inherited characteristics are more likely to survive and reproduce than are organisms with other characteristics.
when people breed dogs for traits they want that is not natural selection. that is selected by man.
when someone who is born with a bad heart gets a new one that is not natural selection nor is that survival of the fittest.
What is your point though? We're aware of what Natural/Artificial selection is, we're not aware of what point your trying to make or what you're asking.
I think his main argument is: Natural Selection =/ Artificial Selection, ipso facto, Darwin was wrong. l:
Obviously I'm paraphrasing here, but not really. I'm not even sure who he's responding to, or just bringing up a different topic altogether?
This is a thread about the Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey show. Unless he just arbitrarily watched Episode 2 on Evolution, not sure what's going on here.
/go-on
well I clicked on that link about the fake news saying that Kansas was blacking out the show over crying from Christians cause of the evolution and how old the earth is debate and all.
not that I believe that god is sitting on top of the clouds influencing our evolution, but it does make sense to me that other things besides what Darwin said have an effect on evolution. we can effect it. we have a hand on dog evolution, it's not just natural selection and survival of the fittest and nothing else. that was my point.
wish that pic showed up I kinda want to see it now lol.
nah I'm not saying Darwin was wrong waraj. I'm saying there is more to it then just what he said. i think he missed some things like how humans can selectively influence it and so it's not the be all end all when it comes to evolution. to me its a mix of both.
if the show talked about that that's pretty cool. i havnt seen it. but I'm def gonna take a look at it after reading this.
You realize other things affecting evolution doesn't change that fact that evolution is real...therefore Christians would still be mad at it.
Still not sure what your point is.
i think he's just telling us that 2+2=4, not sure why
Was being factious really, it's just you came in here, like a crazy person yellin, about evolution while the past 2 pages have been pretty much mainly been about discussing how awesome the show is and not so much about the content. That and being 3 weeks behind, I had a good laugh really though.
Wouldn't be too terrible to start talking about the topics, or specifics, that the show brings up though. But I think we already have a Science! thread in the Poopdeck iirc...
More about neutrinos, less about lilacs, Neil.![]()
Apparently a town here in Oklahoma threatened to seceed over this show... #smh
An excellent companion is NdT's The Inexplicable Universe. The budget doesn't have the boner-inducing visualizations of Cosmos but the science presentations is a step deeper. QM could have been touched on more but I know its way too easy to hit mind-asploding levels of theory and NdT's enthusiasm is quick to surpass the space-time limitations of the video if left unchecked.
This was my favorite episode so far. How small things can get blows my mind way more than the vastness of the universe, for some reason.
Is it just me, or did anyone else think that the "photosynthesis factory" VFX was an incomplete mockup? It looked like the special features deleted scenes from a Pixar movie - raw textures, etc - like they ran out of money.
Also, I love the show, but it's getting crushed in the ratings...

edit: actually it's not as bad as it first appears - even though the total viewership is down, the 18-49 demo (1.3) is higher than Believe and not far off The Good Wife.
It looked like an episode of Reboot and was completely out of place considering the effects they have been using so far to represent atoms and molecules. SUDDENLY, CARTOON FACTORY. They may as well have drawn Keebler Elves with little knives cleaving CO2 molecules.
Don't forget cable as well
