Probably a stupid ISP question about phonelines and modems.

So, going to switch over to comcast (woo..) from century link (more woo..). I have a motorola sb621 modem, but there's no telephone port thing in the back. I want to do the triple play thing, but I read that getting a gateway is bad and I should split things up. The sb6121 doesn't have a telephone port, so what would I need to get so that the phone works? Do I need anything at all? I'm not sure if I'm explaining this correctly either lol. I don't know how the telephone lines things work.

It seems like from my research, I would have to get an ARRIS gateway modem... That sounds kinda awful >

Tricen, the main reason to split it up is because if having multiple services stacked on one another. Example is a lot times when I did tech support, somehow a bad phone port on the modem would trigger the modem to lock up, not allowing anything to work ( power overload ) so the customer who had both HSD and Phone on one modem couldn't use either till the service tech arrived, or they swapped out the modem. In this instance, if you have two separate modems and something like that happens, only one service could be affected.

And quite honestly, I have had great success with ARRIS Gateways, compared to Motorola ( the ones we had sucked bawls ) and Ubee modems.

I thought the phones on Comcast Triple Play were VOIP anyway? Couldn't you just run cat 5 from your router to the phone?

Comcast is fucking fantastic service if you have updated lines. Their customer service is terrible but my connection has been rock solid for three years. So solid that I've had the same IP address for 3 years and I'm not even paying for a static. They quoted me for 50mbps down and I get like 80mbps.

Comcast is VoIP, but modem has a Phone port, multiple ones, on the back of the modem to plug the phone into. Number is "Provisioned" to one of the phone ports on the modem.

Ah. I don't use landlines so I had no clue. Only VOIP systems I'm used to are enterprise level.

Yeah, we use the Avaya Enterprise phone system at T-Dub, and I love it a lot, but residential customers ( and biz customers ) use telephony modems for our VoIP service.
