You missed the point. I'm seeing 18,19,20 year olds who don't know how to function in a workplace or the real world at all for that matter. I've seen many who think that it's a daycare center they get paid to go to. I had one guy that requested a break after 45 minutes.... Another guy called-in 2 days in his first month(I haven't called-in 2 days in the last year).

But yeah I worked year round from age 12 to 20, 4 years as a paperboy (another job that has sharply declined, especially for kids), then subway and a video store.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I could be blaise and simply say happy workers make more productive workers. Part of that happiness lies in pay, of which minimum wage does not support minimum living. I won't fault a single teen for not wanting to be treated like a peasant, especially if that's what some correlate to being an adult. My more optimistic attempt to view society is that we really should be helping one another as able and not just kicking someone to the curb because we think them useless. Being any more specific is just poopdeck fodder, though.

You must not have experienced it, but I've had to explain how to buy groceries to someone because they were spending all of their money on takeout because they didn't know how to go grocery shopping. There has been more but that was a more recent wtf moment.

I'd peg that more on a young kid not knowing how to cook than the inability to push a cart to a cash register (and saving as much as possible on the side). None of which directly tie to someone working through high school, though. Apples, oranges, etc..

After a day of trying finally got through to Southwest Airlines website to snag a cheap flight for me and hubby in December. $198.00 for both of us from Oakland to SNA Orange County. Better than driving 6 hours or more each way.

Hard to really generalize those in their 20s at the moment because there is a widening gap between those who had bad parents and don't know how to cut it, and those who are capable, successful, and/or worthwhile.

Am I the only one who feels like everyone should have to experience that for a period of time? Probably for another thread, but I don't think parents are doing the world a favor by not having their kids have a job before leaving high school.

I don't wish that upon anyone. I used to work at Macy's in the women's sections. Good lord you women are crazy and the place was always a disaster at the end of the day even when we were picking up constantly.

This is fucking truth. It's fucking hell , I did it for over 15 years but it's very humbling imo. At the home store in JCP I worked at the throw rug area always looked like a fucking tornado five minutes after I fixed it.
I always try to at least make sure stuff is hung up in the general area as much as possible. But I'm also not a lazy entitled bitch that some people will always be regardless of life experience.

I've never been rude to employees anywhere, but working in a gas station really made me realize how much that can mean on a bad day. Things such as being exposed to people yelling at me for being unable to find the the desired brand of cigarettes on my very first day, having coins tossed at me and being insulted because of a simple misunderstanding and dealing with unpleasant customers in general really make you see that the whole "customer is king"-mentality leads to a lot of mistreatment (I still wished everyone a nice day).
However, it always felt good to know that those are not the majority. On the contrary, customers leaving with a smile on their face because I was genuinely nice to them, not because I have to, really made me see that mutual respect on both sides of the counter leads to a much better day for all parties involved.

Worked in retail as a Produce clerk for nearly 8 years. Probably have more 10:1 ratio of positive experiences to negative ones. Pretty much got to be myself because my direct manager was a salty older gay dude who mostly hated people so it made me look better by comparison.

I hated shitty, pompous, upper management and the eventual insanity due to job monotony more than shit customers but I dealt with customers a lot less than cashiers. I do not envy you guys.

While I'm still in customer service all mine is over the phone so I never have to deal with them face to face, once the call is over its done. I excel in it because I do like helping people but also know how to tell them to fuck off and give non commital answers in a nice way. When I slam the phone down is when my coworkers know it was a bad day. I'm usually the one supporting them..
