Just curious, but what is the advantage to getting a "smart tv" if you have a console, chromecast, fire stick, htpc, etc etc?

Initially for the features, but nowadays the superior panels are on smart TVs.
The dumb TVs generally are thicker with lesser picture quality in terms of color, refresh rate, etc.
They also don't look as premium. Compare a Samsung dumb TV 5000 series to the smart 7100/7200 series and you get a premium living room presentation. Instead of a big black fixed plastic rectangle pedestal you have the nonfixed metallic cross or the semi circle.
Eventually all the TVs will likely be smart regardless of use or not.

You are a tv sales persons best friend "it is more expensive so it must be better" most of the time the "dumb" tv's have the exact same tv panel in them as the smart tv's. If you actually read the technical specs of the tv.

Actually the best tv panels are on the commercial ones. The ones you see outside as digital signage or stuff you see in a hospital. Sometimes these have less features, ports, or no tv tuner etc

The explicit example I gave was a clear cut and honest difference between panels on smart TVs vs dumb tvs.

They don't use the same panel generally between a low end dumb model and high end smart model, but this isn't an issue to the masses. There are ways things are cheaper and it is not arbitrary. Refresh rate, color reproduction, quality, etc. Typically they mass produce a dumb panel and smart panel for several lines of a type of TV. Its more efficient. A un50h5002 and 5200series share the same panel and one is dumb and one is smart. However, when you move to a un50f/h/fh6200+ things change and only come in smart tvs. I still follow these things.

Samsung makes its panels brighter to give consumers the impression that it's a better picture, etc, there are many tricks.

I do read tech specs, its why there's a KDL48w600b at the foot of my bed instead of a kdl50w800/50b. Similar (almost exact) picture except one is thinner (smart TVs generally are as I was saying) and smarter than the other. Its not like idk what I'm talking about..

Again you are confusing the connection between smart and dumb tv's and panels. Obviously a low end tv and a high end tv are going to use different electronics to drive the panel (most of the actual lcd panels are exactly the same and are only made by a handful of companies in the world.)

This has nothing to do with smart vs. dumb tv's. Most companies if you look have higher end dumb tv's that correspond to each smart version.

At some point they may be phasing out the dumb tv's because it is more economical or they want to push the smart tv's more or because they can eek out a little bit more money from consumers but there isn't actually any connection between picture and panel quality and the addition of smart features in a tv.

Brightness and color and other things like that are settings that you can change and control. TV's leave the factory with settings that set the tv at the extreme that make it "look" better in the short term but in reality make it look worse. They set the tv's for the sales floor not for the home.

For a sales person you sure do sound uninformed about tv's, you know you are not supposed to buy into your own bullshit.
