Wow, somehow I totally missed that until you quoted it, Toki.
Leptit, you must be a true glass half full kinda guy... sheesh. (To be able to see even a slight win in that situation.)

    My condolences.

The two wins I see there are

His mother passed away quickly and didn't have to suffer for years

He gets to be the Las person who gets his mothers food and no one is taking it away from him!

If not that isn't a win story just a sad and I'm sorry for your lose

After I spent most of my day in a sea of blood and feces, I had just finished cleaning the bathroom while cursing cigarettes and smokers, when my brother came home and told me to get into the car. My mother had been fetched by an ambulance about four hours prior, and three hours after that she passed away. According to the doctor, the thing I found in the blood-filled bucket in the bathroom might have been part of her lung or the tumor that had been found about five months earlier.

Regardless, I said my goodbyes and will now commence eating what everyone else wanted to eat but didn't eat after all - the last lunch my mother prepared.

I didn't cry, but I did hold my tears back. While I'm happy that she didn't suffer, it's still kind of hard to accept that she's gone. However, she had a few happy months and died very quickly without having to go through months of pain; I couldn't ask for more.
Sorry brother. My father passed away almost ten years ago from lung cancer. I know what you're going through. Sadly my father lived in agony for the last two years of his life. I always cherish the extra time we had with him but I wish he had passed quickly and suddenly to spare him the pain and indignity of a horrible affliction.

Thanks a lot for the kind words; I appreciate it.

I definitely prefer thinking of the glass as half-full, but I honestly can't see how I'm supposed to get through all of this not thinking like that. The fact that she did not have to suffer and simply died quickly after having spent the past few months comparatively happily is a great help in all of this; knowing that she was happy and that it was the best for her is what makes it bearable.

However, at the same time, it admittedly hurts to think of those times and how happiness was also taken from her. When she was first diagnosed with cancer, we were already aware of the fact that something was wrong with her lung; we were just hoping for the best. She had been smoking for most of her life and seeing her there with an e-cigarette after the initial diagnosis, at least trying to get rid of her addiction; it was quite telling of how scared she was.

A week later, she was told that the cancer could not be cured. That was the first time I really felt sad about it; not even because I knew her death was imminent and that I would miss her, but because I felt sorry for her, about the way the little bit of hope she had was crushed and that the efforts she had made ultimately meant nothing.

However, she regained hope and, quite often, surprised me with how strong she actually managed to be. Of course, there were highs and lows, especially because she, being quite conscious of her weight, really started seeing the side-effects of her medication, especially cortisone (leads to a lot of bloating).

Nonetheless, for the most part, she was happy; that's plenty of reason for me to be happy as well. And I have to; with most of the people around me being rather down right now, I need to be able to help them.

Despite that, however, the lingering question still remains; could this have been avoided had she not smoked? Of course, it still takes a lot of bad luck to get lung cancer, whether one smokes or not. Nonetheless, seeing what it does to one's body, can people really afford to increase the odds for the sake of having such a terrible habit? I saw my mother's face turn completely grey in a matter of seconds when she had a seizure. I saw her cough up blood for the first time, filling the sink with it. Then I saw the aftermath of the second time and spent the better part of yesterday completely erasing every single trace of blood, innards and feces that covered the entire bathroom. I held parts of her lung in my hands and could barely tell them apart from the cloth in the bucket because there was so much blood in it.

After inhaling second-hand smoke through my entire childhood and seeing the results of lung cancer, I simply cannot see a justification for smoking. A lot of people may think that they won't get lung cancer or that they'll accept it if they get it, but trust me; they won't, not at first. People who say that bank on their luck, plain and simple. And even if they do eventually accept it, for everyone else around them, it will hurt to watch the life fade out of them.

Mind you, I'm not blaming the cigarette industry; people choose for themselves - but I'll be the first one to tell them that it's a retarded choice, plain and simple. There's nothing cool about having your daughter wipe the feces off your body before the ambulance arrives, nothing at all. Nothing cool about leaving behind children who aren't even in their thirties.

As I said, it's mostly a matter of bad luck; but as much as I want to see it in a reasonable fashion, I'd love to punch a "proud" smoker in the face, as well as everyone whose smoke I have to inhale when I'm outside. And, since I'm at it, if someone tells you that they or a relative have been diagnosed with lung cancer, don't follow up "I'm sorry to hear that" with "I should also quit smoking", because that's about the single most infuriatingly annoying thing I've heard.

    Sorry for the rant.

Thanks a lot for those words, even though I'm sorry to hear of your father. While that's a lot of time to be gained after this kind of diagnosis, I can hardly imagine how hard it must be to witness an increasingly bad condition over the course of two years, not to mention the pain the afflicted must go through. Even with that, however, I'm sure that your father was more than grateful for everything your family did for him during that timeframe; if anything, it must have made the pain more bearable.

Going to second this. Although shorter, my mom died from liver and kidney failure 2 years ago. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks before finally passing and it was miserable. She was completely yellow, eyes to toenails, and could barely eat or move. I think it hurt more hearing her asking to go home and crying than when I got the news she actually passed.

I really wouldn't wish that on anyone; the suffering or the pain of watching a loved one die. I have to applaud your glass half-full attitude. Getting depressed about it is normal, but you're in a better position to help the rest of your family if you're able to accept what has happened and move on.

New job orientation today. 8 hours of mind numbing HR stuff, but made $200, so I'm not complaining.

Oh and finding out one of your friends mom is head of HR and head of new employee orientation and is a total MILF.
