It was mostly school-related. Work is pretty light this time of year thankfully. Getting more edumaction is just a terrible idea. Just started my mandatory 2 weeks so I'll be AFK a lot for a little while :D

Summer is the worst of it. Accelerated schedule = 2 6 week sessions, 2 meetings a week for 4 hours each,

Honestly so does a lot of bureaucracy within the school system. The teachers want to just teach the kids and not have to be fucking micromanaged about it but we (I recognize I have not graduated yet but I've taught lessons so fuck it I'm saying "we" here) have to teach the shit that will be on the test. In Florida the standardized tests are changing, at least the English ones are becoming more writing-based and less "remember this obscure fact from a book you probably haven't read" -based, which is good and allows for more freedom. I'd rather teach the kids how to write well and how to use their reading skills to find textual evidence to support their writing than to have them remember a bunch of facts about books or big words that they probably won't ever use.

The government thinks that teachers need more accountability, and that trickles down to the parents. It's true that a lot of parents simply don't give a fuck anymore and can't be bothered to teach their kids or help them outside of the classroom anymore. And there are some things that we are not allowed to teach, like real sex ed, that kids are not learning from their parents and then the government officials try to make us hammer abstinence in a little harder like that actually fucking works at all.

So basically what makes the school system shit is this accountability and testing-based model which stresses the fuck out of the teachers and students alike and doesn't prove that the kids actually know anything that will prepare them for life, only that they know how to take tests which is completely fucking useless from a workplace standpoint.

Not to even mention that in some states all you need is a cert to teach and no education degree is required. Hell I could go teach math with my accounting degree in my state. I know so many coaches who are teachers that hate teaching. They only teach because its an easy gig.

I see a lot of people complain about millenials not having realistic expectations or life skills and it just occurred to me that they're the first generation to grow up completely in the standardize-everything fad. Maybe that's why.

Apparently the week of September 10th is great for airfare as we got 2 round-trip tickets for about $230 on Southwest. I'll happily take that over 6 hour drive each way to Disneyland.

Also grabbed a killer rate on a recently remodeled hotel through Orbitz with a promo code for said trip. Now September can hurry the fuck up.

I think a lot of it has to do with the notion that kids of my generation (I'm 30) and younger have grown up our whole lives being told repeatedly "You can do anything if you work hard and put your mind to it and you HAVE to get a college education!" which is just not true for everyone.

This. In America, my biggest issue with College is that they want every student to take every bullshit general class. Kids learned enough math, English, History, etc. in grade school to get my by in their adult life. College should be about honing specific skills sets and knowledge. Big reason why our system is shit is because so many give up, drop out, etc.
