Chinchillas are fun, though. Friend of ours had 4 of them, but two of them died from a disease a fifth one they bought from a pet store had.

Most of those are too difficult to maintain in a classroom. Get a rat, fish, frog, snake even. Something easy to care for that won't be on the verge of dying after leaving for a weekend.

A friend of mine in college had a pet ferret briefly and it made his entire apartment stink. He got rid of it after a few weeks. Cute creatures but man they smelled awful.

If you do go rabbit, I'd say go with a Flemish Giant, the temperament and size makes them better for large numbers of kids. But they do need a lot of space (and food/waste management), which you might not have.
A dwarf rabbit would probably be easier to fit into most classrooms.

I'd shy away from most reptiles, since many need live food. You do not want live crickets escaped in a classroom. TRUST ME ON THIS, your sanity over the school year will thank me.

also you could go with a tortoise. not exactly the most cuddly fellas, but they have personality and are reasonably smart. if mine is any indication, they vastly prefer fresh food to dried, and you could have the kids grow the food.

Don't be crazy, chinchillas are ridiculous to take care of. And you need more than one unless you expect a child to constantly be with it. Also, what happens on the weekends? That's why you need two+, or just get an animal that doesn't have the requirements of those squirrel wannabes.

I don't recall what grade you teach, but snakes make great low maintanance pets, and by simply feeding them children learn about the circle of life. Alternatively, you can just feed them when the kids aren't there. If not, hamster/gerbil makes an easy pet but they often have personality issues.

Or just get a damn fish. Or a frog. I think the point of a class pet is being lost on you. It's not about having an exotic animal in the classroom that matters; it's the responsibility of caring for another life and watching it grow that's important. Hence, a cheap fish or amphibian, or a reptile with extremely low maintenance needs.
