Don't be crazy, chinchillas are ridiculous to take care of. And you need more than one unless you expect a child to constantly be with it. Also, what happens on the weekends? That's why you need two+, or just get an animal that doesn't have the requirements of those squirrel wannabes.

I would take w/e pet I get home on the weekends probably.

I don't recall what grade you teach, but snakes make great low maintanance pets, and by simply feeding them children learn about the circle of life. Alternatively, you can just feed them when the kids aren't there. If not, hamster/gerbil makes an easy pet but they often have personality issues.

I have a much better solution. Set every living snake on the God damn planet on fire. Where ever I teach there will be NO snakes. NO SNAKES.

Or just get a damn fish. Or a frog. I think the point of a class pet is being lost on you. It's not about having an exotic animal in the classroom that matters; it's the responsibility of caring for another life and watching it grow that's important. Hence, a cheap fish or amphibian, or a reptile with extremely low maintenance needs.

I think you miss the point that w/e animal I get will be taken home by me during weekends/vacations, so it should be a pet I/my kids enjoy. I don't care that a chinchilla is exotic, I care that it's an animal I have often thought about getting if it weren't for the cats.

I also tend to kill fish.

Except I had a goldfish survive for 8 years. The rest have died within weeks.

I've never been to New York or another area where there is enough public transportation so I wouldn't know what it would be like to not have a car. Longest time I've been without a car was around a year and it drove me nuts.

My 5th grade teacher in California had a Chinchilla class pet and worked out just fine. Most the kids loved helping take care of it during the day and it was really friendly. Damn thing got super fat from everyone continually feeding it though lol

I had a 4th grade teacher who literally looked exactly like and acted just like Miss Frizzle from The Magic Schoolbus. We even had a lizard as a class pet. She was amazing. Still my favorite teacher ever to this day and I still talk to her on facebook! She sparked my love for science and whatnot. And yes she has the crazy frizzy red hair!
